It’s mostly clear even now before dawn. We shouldn’t have much in the way of clouds today. 36F, wind at 0-4mph, AQI33, UV4. 10% chance of rain today and tomorrow. We’re under a SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY until 10pm tonight, though. Today’s likely to be the last dry day for quite a ways out, too. Everything is showers and sometimes breezy for the rest of the 10-day forecast.
Yesterday we got up a little early and that meant I was really, really sleepy in the early part of the day. It didn’t help that I was *really* cold for some reason, probably one thing heterodyning off the other.
Eventually, I was editing pictures and adding them to the feast report. I had to go through some of the boxes of feast gear, but Tempus did most of that. We’re going to have to re-do them during the week. I gave up around 1am.
Today we’re getting up a bit early to see if we can get things finished at the shop before we open. Tempus needs to go do laundry, too, if the laundromat is open. They’re getting a propane tank replaced and have to be closed to do it. They were all day yesterday.
Today’s plant is the Weeping Cherry, Grandma’s favorite, which seems to be this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prunus_subhirtella, the Higan Cherry. There are listings for cherries and weeping trees both, but the weeping cherries do not produce fruit, only lovely flowers. Cherries: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry Cherry Blossom: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_blossom Weeping Trees: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weeping_tree – Divination, Creativity; Healing – Objects made of Cherry wood are used to attract Love. Cherry juice is used as a substitute for blood in old recipes. Cherry gum is burned as a resin for sore throats.
First Equirria – There were two days of horse racing framing the festivals of the gods of Rome as the family of Mars. They’re some of the earliest religious observances documented in Roman practice and may have been preserved as a religious requirement long after the time when anyone knew what they were for! Driving the biga, the two-wheeled light-weight chariot was a feature of these races, since it had a ritual sacred aspect as well as the excitement of a horse race! More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equirria and on the biga here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biga_(chariot)

Love & Light,
Today’s Astro & Calendar
Waxing Moon Magick – The waxing moon is for constructive magick, such as love, wealth, success, courage, friendship, luck or healthy, protection, divination. Any working that needs extra power, such as help finding a new job or healings for serious conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams. Phase ends at the Tide Change on 3/9 at 10:48am. Diana’s Bow – On the 3rd day after the new moon you can (weather permitting) see the tiny crescent in the sky, the New Moon holding the Old Moon in her arms. Begin on your goals for the next month. A good time for job interviews or starting a project. Take a concrete step! God/dess aspect: Daughter/Son/Innocence – Associated God/dess: Vesta, Horus. Phase ends on 2/27 at 7:32pm. Waxing Crescent phase – Keywords for the Crescent phase are: expansion, growth, struggle, opportunity. It is the time in a cycle that you gather the wisdom learned in the new phase and communicate your intention to move forward. Light a candle. Write or read an affirmation. LISTEN & ABSORB. Commit to your goal. God/dess aspect: Maiden/Youth, energy and enthusiasm – Associated God/dess: Artemis & Apollo, Mayet/Djehuti, Freya/Frey. Phase ends at the Quarter on 3/2 at 11:57am.
The crescent Moon is 6° or 7° left of Venus during and after twilight, as shown here. How early can you spot them both? You can start trying long before sunset! The waxing crescent Moon gains about 10° of altitude each evening at this time of year, and that movement carries it to a position 7° to Venus’ left tonight. The two form a spectacular and photogenic pair from shortly after sunset until around 9:30 p.m. local time.
Jupiter (magnitude –1.9, in Sagittarius) shines much brighter (and whiter) lower left of Mars left. They’re closing in on each other; Mars is 14° from Jupiter on the morning of February 22nd and 11° from it on the 29th.

Celtic Tree Month of Nuin/Nion/Ash, Feb 18 – Mar 17, Nion (NEE-uhn), ash – the common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is a major tree of lowland forests in much of Europe, along with oaks and beeches. It grows to 40 m (130 feet) in open sites, with a broad crown reminiscent of American elm trees. Ash was and still is an important timber tree, and is a traditional material for the handle of a besom. The common ash is occasionally cultivated in North America, and similar native ash species are widely grown as street trees. Ashes are members of the Olive family (Oleaceae).

If Candlemas [February 2] be mild and gay,
Go saddle your horses and buy them hay;
But if Candlemas be stormy and black,
It carries the winter away on its back. – Proverb
Priestess: The soil beneath me has given the shelter I needed through the long, cold winter. Now I arise to accept the warmth of our sun lord returned. He and I will spend this time of our youth playing in the grassy medows, climbing the trees of the great forest, and swimming the cool waters of the deepest lakes. I will come to be his friend, and we will be children until Beltain.
Come with me through my lush garden, and let’s play games. Let’s look at the flowers that bloom at this turn of the wheel. Do you see the deep reds, the brilliant blues, and pure whites? This is because of our sun lord. It’s his brilliant youth that gives me the ability to grow something so beautiful. My only regret is that one day his youth will die. The wheel turns.
Take this flower it’s the most beloved that I have in the garden. Smell it. Do you notice that the fragrance is mine? When you smell this scent remember me. In turn I will wear this flower in my hair everyday until I am ready to give up my maiden hood at beltain. Then I will lie down with him. We will make love with each other. He will father a sun, and I will carry it to Yule after his death. Then he will be reborn again. His brilliance will return, and we can play in the garden at the next ostara. The wheel turns.
Maidens take from me this flower. It’s the one gift I have for you. Let those you want to be your lovers smell it, and then were it in your hair. When they see you wearing the flower they’ll remember the scent of me. In this way I will help you to build the love you desire during you maiden hood. At beltain you will be ready to give it to the young man who smelled your flower.
The wheel is turning. It does for everyone. Remember this. For if you do. When it’s time for you to be a child you will live those moments to their fullest potential.
So Mote it be
