Daily Stuff 5-23-20 Defenestration

Hi, folks!

Featured photo by Ken Gagne. Minus Tide at 8:03 AM of -0.9 feet. The shop is closed for the duration, hoping to open on 5/28.

The puddles are drying and although yesterday was alternating clouds and sun there wasn’t any rain past the morning. Right now the clouds are starting to color. It’s going to be a pretty sunrise. 42F, wind at 1mph and gusting, AQI38, UV6. 10% chance of rain today and tonight. Right now, it looks like it ought to stay dry until Friday night and later in the week we could be looking at temps in the 70’s. There’s a big swirl of cloud way west of Alaska and it’s dragging things into it, but it doesn’t look to be coming ashore for a week….

A bunch of the new plants.

Yesterday I was up at 11. I’m trying to set my waking time to something close to what I’ll need for the shop being open. I got my mail taken care of and then went to get into my noon class to discover that the series ended last week, despite advertising all over even last night! Well, I got into one on gardening in the PNW maritime area, instead, then listened to a couple of stories. I crawled back in at that point and Tempus and I got up around 3pm.

Creeping buttercups

He went out to run errands while I was in a diversity class from 4-5:30. I was setting up newsletter frames for awhile, and then I went outside to get plant pix while there was sunshine. I took a break to let my back settle, then went back out to harvest. Tempus was puttering in back by then… making more coffee? Yes, he made more coffee and then got us some supper.

The garden looking north

I was watching an interesting video about rum. The presenter mentioned some books on the history of it that I hadn’t tracked down before. After that there was a livestream of some interesting music. Tempus made a lovely chicken salad for supper. I got a nap after the concert was done. When I got up I read and embroidered for awhile, then went back to newsletter frames. Tempus got me a spot to work and I started on candying the angelica.

Look how many!

Today I could be in classes that start at 8am…. I don’t think so… but I’m considering the one at 10am…. 74 classes listed for today. Wow….. Obviously I’m not going to take that many, but I’m probably going to do another 6 or 8 hour bit….

I’m hoping Tempus will get some sleep today. He’s run short 4 nights in a row. Once he’s up, though, I need to finish the angelica and do the cooking challenge.

Yachats own Whale in the Park sculpture. It actually spouts, although is sometimes turned off during droughts. Photo by Ken Gagne on 5/22/16 The funny story associated with this is that a whale washed ashore in a storm and liked Yachats so well, that there he stayed!

plant flower buttercup Ranunculus_bulbosusToday’s Plant is the Buttercup that flourishes in my area in two types, Ranunculus bulbosus (sometimes called St Anthony’s Turnip)  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranunculus_bulbosus and Ranunculus repens,  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranunculus_repens (called creeping buttercup or crowfoot) which is the variety in my garden. These are non-native plants and invasive, but not usually worried about too much, since they usually grow in grasslands and very poor soil, not suited for agriculture. Although the fresh plant is poisonous, the sap being used as a blistering agent for gout and rheumatism, the dried plant is safe for consumption. Tinctures of this plant have been used on shingles and infusions for “soremouth”. –buttercup2color Masculine, Mercury (Uranus), Fire – These are used in spells for tenacity & stubbornness, both to create and cure, and as a plant of fertility, possibly being the plant that the Flora gave Juno to use to get pregnant with Mars. Carry in sachets (dried flowers only) for fertility or the dried leaves for tenacity. This is also used for harmony and for Sight (and called Frog’s Foot) Use buttercup flower petals in magickal potpourris for spells regarding: divination, energy, innocence, prosperity, youth. Use buttercup in solar spells involving energy and prosperity.

220px-Prag_Vladislav-SaalToday is the anniversary of the 2nd Defenestration of Prague that happened in 1618. That such a funny word. It means that someone’s been chucked out a window! In the case of the two Prague Defenestrations they happened as a political protest of injustice. This 2nd one was in response to the political decisions imposed on the Czechs (who were mostly Protestant at this time) unjustly taking away their religious freedom by imposing Catholicism and destroying Protestant nobles.  It directly led to the 30 Years War. The folks responsible for implementing the orders were chucked out the window of the assembly room in Praszky Hrad (the castle seat of the government, picture above). They fell down the castle wall and down a slope. It didn’t kill them. They said it was the intervention of the Virgin Mary, but the Protestants insisted that they had fallen into a dungheap! There is more info here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defenestrations_of_Prague and some about the ensuing war here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirty_Years%27_War

The shop is closed for the duration, but hoping to open on 5/28. Need something? Give us a call at 541-563-7154 or Facebook or email at ancientlight@peak.org We should be able to accommodate requests and even allow a little shopping, one person at a time.

Tail and anti-tail – In 2013, Comet PanSTARRS (C/2011 L4) displayed a large anti-tail. As Earth passes through the orbital plane of C/2017 T2 this week, a smaller anti-tail may develop. – Mallorcasaint (Wikimedia Commons)

After full dark falls, find the familiar Big Dipper asterism. From Dubhe, the star at the cup’s upper right-hand corner, look about 10.7° west to find 23 Ursae Majoris, shining at magnitude 3.7. Train your binoculars — or, better yet, a 4-inch scope (or larger) — on the area and look northeast of 23 Ursae Majoris. First you’ll hit M81, about 6.5° from the star; next comes M82, about 0.5° farther. You’ll find PanSTARRS less than 1° northeast of M82. Lower powers will show two or three of these objects at once. Larger scopes (12 inches) may reveal a hint of green in the comet’s tail. Over the next several days, swing back to this region to follow PanSTARRs as it continues southeast. You may see it develop a “double-spiked” tail, particularly between the 24th and 26th. This occurs because as Earth passes through the comet’s orbital plane, we see the comet from a different perspective and PanSTARRS’ short, fan-shaped tail appears to flatten to edge-on. From this unique vantage point, you may see the comet’s green or blue ion and dust tail, as well as a thin, white “anti-tail” pointing in the opposite direction.

Comet C/2020 F8 SWAN captured by Australia’s Siding Spring telescope. – Esposito Raffaele / Telescope Siding Spring / – paceweather.com

Comet SWAN: Yet another fizzler. Comet SWAN (C/2020 F8) has unexpectedly faded down to 6th magnitude or dimmer, instead of brightening to 3rd magnitude as was predicted for its approach to its May 27th perihelion. It’s a tiny, faint thing low in the northwest right at the end of evening twilight this week; you’ll need a telescope, patience, and an adequately detailed chart.

Now, as the thin crescent Moon makes its monthly reappearance, while Venus and Mercury form a nice triangle with much fainter Beta Tauri. The triangle, which changes from day to day, is 3° or 4° on a side. The visibilities of faint objects are exaggerated here.

A twilight challenge: As soon as you can see Venus this evening, start looking lower left of it for the very thin crescent Moon hardly more than a day old (see the date and time of new Moon just above). The Moon and Venus are 4° or 5° apart during twilight for North America. Here’s the arrangement as seen from the middle of the continent, and it will vary only a little for the rest of the US and Canada:
A 2-percent-lit Moon hangs 4.5° south of Venus half an hour after sunset. Venus itself is just 4 percent lit. Its disk, however, spans an impressive 55″. Mercury, now 3.5° east of Venus, is nearly 64 percent lit, but only 6″ across. A few hours later, the Moon passes 4° south of Venus at 11 P.M. EDT, the closest the pair will get. By this time, however, they’ve sunk below the horizon.

Eta Aquariid meteor shower – Partly due to the low altitude of the Eta Aquariids’ radiant when viewed from northern latitudes, the shower is not considered one of the year’s best. But with Mars hovering in the nearby sky this year, it’s worth taking the time to view it. – Astronomy: Roen Kelly

With no Moon in the sky, tonight is also a good time to keep an eye out for stray Eta Aquariid meteors. Although the shower’s peak was early in the month, it’s considered active for a few more days, so you might spot a few stragglers if you’re outside for a while.
Mercury is having a nice apparition in evening twilight. Look for it in the west-northwest, farther upper left of bright Venus every evening. (By week’s end Venus has all but dropped out of sight.) Mercury fades this week from magnitude –0.6 to 0.0. In a telescope it is a tiny “half Moon” shape 7 arcseconds in diameter.

Celtic Tree Month of Huath/Hawthorn, May 13 – Jun 9 – I am fair among flowers – Color: Purple – Class: Peasant – Letter: H – Meaning: Being held back for a period of time – Hawthorn – Like willows, hawthorns have many species in Europe, and they are not always easy to tell apart. All are thorny shrubs in the Rose family (Rosaceae), and most have whitish or pinkish flowers. The common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.) and midland hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata (Poiret) DC.) are both widespread. They are common in abandoned fields and along the edges of forests. Both are cultivated in North America, as are several native and Asiatic hawthorns. Curtis Clark

Litha Magick – Meditation

Summer Solstice Meditation:  http://www.cotcg.com/Crystal%20Grove%20Web/Litha.htm

Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and relax.

At this time of greatest light, we meditate on light as a symbol of spiritual energy. Breathe now gently and deeply and with each breath become aware of the light that surrounds you and the light that is within you — the light that is the energy of Our Great Father.

The light can be any color. It is often imagined as white — like bright sunlight. But it can be any color, any intensity, that is best for you. Blue, green, yellow, purple, rose; we know that light can also be black. The light may stay the same color for you during this meditation or it may change from color to color, or become a blend of many colors.

See the light now in your mind’s eye. This light is all around us, we are bathed in its brightness, energy, and warmth.

Focus on the light until you sense that you and the light are one. This will be your signal that you can now bring the light inside you.

When you bring the light inside you, one way is to let it stream in through your crown chakra at the top of your head. (If it’s already entered another way, that’s okay.)

The light — this healing energy — flows through you now, from your crown, down to your third eye (between your eyebrows) to your throat, your shoulders and your arms, and your hands, to your heart, your stomach, shining brightly at your solar plexus just above your navel, to your sex organs, shining too at your tailbone. The healing light travels down through your legs, your knees, your ankles and your feet. Feel the warmth of this healing energy now as it travels all through your body.

Now sense the one part of your body where the light can shine the brightest and imagine the light there. See it shine.

Now send the light out from that part of your body where it shines the brightest. Send it out a few inches from your body.

Now extend your light out from your body just a little more, then a little more, until your light extends a few feet from your body. Now, if you like, extend your light to reach your sisters. Our lights meet and we are connected by this great light, connected by our renewed knowledge of Our Great Father. Take a few minutes now to sense this energy and this connectedness.

Now take from this light the energy that you need, and know that there is plenty for all. For the Source of this light is endless and ever abundant. Take a moment to experience His abundance, and know that as you partake of His light and His love, so do you give your light and your love. And as you give energy, so do you receive it. And thus does the circle of life continue.

And as we come back now to this time and place, let us give thanks for the return of Our Great Father, and for our return unto Him.
