Marcie Sherman (from Facebook, collected 9/2/20)
I’m a patriotic American: I support and defend the Constitution. Do you?
If you say, “he didn’t have the right to speak to the cop,” you don’t support his First Amendment right to speak.
If you say, “it’s his fault because he had a knife,” you don’t support his Second Amendment right to bear arms.
If you say, “it’s his fault, because he walked away,” you don’t support his Fourth Amendment right to be free from unlawful seizures.
If you say, “he should have been shot because he was charged with bad crimes,” you don’t support his Fifth Amendment right to due process.
If you say, “he doesn’t deserve an attorney because of his charges,” you don’t support his Sixth Amendment right to counsel.
If you say, “he deserved it,” you don’t support his Eighth Amendment right against cruel and unusual punishment.
I’m a patriotic American: I support and defend the Constitution. Do you? Because it applies to every single person. No one is above the law. No one gets to pick and choose who deserves the Constitution and who doesn’t. Our country is founded on a fair and just criminal justice system. Be an American and support the entire Constitution.
