It’s beautifully clear, at the moment, with some little wisps obscuring thing in spots. 49F, wind at 6-9mph and gusting, AQI14-26, UV1. Chance of rain 10% today and 2% tonight. Other than some fog for a couple of hours on either side of sunrise it ought to stay sunny until mid-afternoon, then cloud up until showers are possible in the late evening. We’re under a SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY until 3pm on Friday. We’re looking at a good balance of sun and rain in the long-range forecast with the spate of rain tonight and Saturday night, and then a chance of showers from Wednesday on, but otherwise dry.

Yesterday I wrote hard, really concentrating until I finished in the late afternoon. At that point my brain went to mush and all I managed for the rest of the day was some embroidery. Sunset was gorgeous, but I didn’t have a camera handy. Tempus fixed the hall light and made a batch of bohemian rye rolls, but burned the heck out of the 2nd batch. He headed out just past 2am.

Today I have to catch up on what I haven’t done for two days. Tempus needs to go to the PO. It’s bulk route night, so we’ll have to decide whether I’m going with.

I thought y’all might get a kick out of this Ronald Hutton documentary about Wicca. It’s a bit, “ooh-wow” in spots, but, oh well…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHAqBjOvYOQ

Today’s plant is FoxgloveDigitalis purpurea. It is naturalized in the PNW, being native to Europe, not the Americas. Digitalis was one of the first heart medications and was extracted from the plant and then synthesized. The plant is poisonous, not just because of this (too much causes irregular heartbeat), but some other chemicals. Also known as Lady’s Glove, Witches’ Gloves, Fairy Fingers, or Dead Men’s Bells. – Feminine, Venus, Water – A Druid sacred herb associated with the “little people”. Lust, protection, decision, grow in a garden for protection of house and yard, reveals insincerity. Flower meaning – a wish, “I am not ambitious for myself but for you”.

Mallard Day, All Souls’ College, Oxford University – In 1437 the founder of this college was turning over options for various sites in his mind. On this day he woke from a dream of a huge mallard trapped in the place where he should build. Workmen went to dig and found an enormous bird making quite a racket. In honor of this event the Mallard Song is sung and a feast is held on this day. More about the college and the custom here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Souls_College,_Oxford#Customs

Love & Light,

Today’s Astro & Calendar

Waxing Moon Magick – The waxing moon is for constructive magick, such as love, wealth, success, courage, friendship, luck or healthy, protection, divination. Any working that needs extra power, such as help finding a new job or healings for serious conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams. Phase ends at the Tide Change on 1/28 at 11:16am. New Moon – The beginning of a new cycle. Keywords for the New phase are: beginning, birth, emergence, projection, clarity. It is the time in a cycle that you are stimulated to take a new action. During this phase the new cycle is being seeded by your vision, inner and outer. Engage in physical activity. Spend time alone. VISUALIZE your goals for the 29.6-day cycle ahead. The new moon is for starting new ventures, new beginnings. Also love and romance, health or job hunting. God/dess aspect: Infancy, the Cosmic Egg, Eyes-Wide-Open – Associated God/dess: Inanna who was Ereshkigal. Phase ends at 9am on 1/14. Diana’s Bow – On the 3rd day after the new moon you can (weather permitting) see the tiny crescent in the sky, the New Moon holding the Old Moon in her arms. Begin on your goals for the next month. A good time for job interviews or starting a project. Take a concrete step! God/dess aspect: Daughter/Son/Innocence – Associated God/dess: Vesta, Horus. Phase ends on 1/20 at 1:02pm.

Back in the evening sky now, the Moon is a waxing crescent in twilight on its way up from low Mercury and super-low Jupiter.

Back in the evening sky now, the Moon is a waxing crescent in twilight on its way up from low Mercury and super-low Jupiter. In bright twilight, look low in the southwest for the thin crescent Moon aiming its curve lower right toward Mercury and disappearing Jupiter, as shown above.

The Pleiades and Hyades – The Pleiades (right) and the Hyades (left), two young open star clusters in the constellation Taurus the Bull, appear prominent on February evenings. – Rogelio Bernal Andreo (DeepSkyColors.com)

Above Orion shines orange Aldebaran with the large, loose Hyades cluster in its background. Binoculars are the ideal instrument for the Hyades given the group’s size: its brightest stars (4th and 5th magnitude) span about 4°. (The Pleiades higher above are hardly more than 1° across counting just the brightest stars.) The main Hyades stars famously form a V. It’s currently lying on its side, and Aldebaran forms the lower left tip of the V. With binoculars, follow the lower branch of the V to the right from Aldebaran. The first thing you come to is the House asterism: a pattern of stars like a child’s drawing of a house with a peaked roof. The house is currently upright and bent to the right like it got pushed. The House includes three easy binocular double stars that form an equilateral triangle, with each pair facing the others. The brightest pair is Theta1 and Theta2 Tauri. You may find that you can resolve the Theta pair with your unaided eyes.

The Moon passes 2° south of Mercury at 3 A.M. EST; both are below the horizon at that time.

Pluto is in conjunction with the Sun at 9 A.M. EST.

Also at 6 A.M. PST, Uranus is stationary against the background stars. The penultimate planet in our solar system is located in Aries the Ram, visible after sunset. You can easily pick out its magnitude 5.8 glow with binoculars or a small scope. Its 4″-wide disk will likely appear as a “flat” gray star.

Just 3.3° west of the ice giant is a much brighter planet: Mars, also making its way through Aries, shines at magnitude 0.1. Now 9″ across, Mars is moving away from Earth along its orbit outside our own. Over the course of January, it will remain in Aries but shrink another 1″ and dim a few tenths of a magnitude. Nonetheless, it remains an excellent evening object this month, readily visible in small and large scopes alike. If you return to this region of the sky night after night, you’ll see the Red Planet move noticeably northeast each night, passing 1.7° north of Uranus on the 21st. After tonight, Uranus will also begin inching northeast — but because it is much more distant, it appears to move much more slowly across the sky. The ice giant will remain within 4′ of its current position all month, even as Mars flies quickly past.

Neptune (magnitude 7.9, in Aquarius) is getting low in the southwest right after dark. Neptune is 2.3 arcseconds wide, harder to resolve than Uranus except in very good seeing. Finder charts for Uranus and Neptune.

Celtic Tree Month of Beth/Birch, Dec 24 – Jan 20, Beith – (BEH), birch – The silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) is the most common tree birch in much of Europe. It grows up to 30 m (100 feet) high, but is more often found in spreading clumps on sandy soils. It is one of the first trees to colonize an area after a mature forest is cut; this is probably a large part of its symbolic connection with new beginnings. It is cultivated in North America, often under the name of weeping birch. The three trees in my front yard form root sprouts that would take over the bed where they are planted if I didn’t cut them back. The common birch (B. pubescens Ehrh.) is almost as widespread as the silver birch, but grows primarily on acid or peaty soils. It can reach 20 m (65 feet) in height. Birches are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae). Curtis Clark

Journal Prompt – Where? – Where do I see myself, so far as my goals, personal development, residence, or job, in five years, and do I have a plan to arrive at this destination?

~   I can’t – in my present state anyhow – bank on religion. God has no thighs and no life. When one calls to him in the silence of the night he doesn’t turn over and say, “What is the trouble, Dear?” – HG Wells; in a letter to Rebecca West, with whom he was having a love affair
~   It is easy to go down into Hell; night and day, the gates of dark Death stand wide; but to climb back again, to retrace one’s steps to the upper air – there’s the rub, the task. – Virgil; ibid
~   It is seldom that liberty of any kind is lost all at once. – David Hume (1711 – 1776), Scottish historian and philosopher
~   I’ve done the most awful rubbish in order to have somewhere to go in the morning. – Richard Burton

One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;
And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter. – –Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

Silliness – Get a Haircut

A young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father, who was a minister, if they could discuss the use of the car. His father took him to his study and said to him, “I’ll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut and we’ll talk about it.”

After about a month the boy came back and again asked his father if they could discuss use of the car. They again went to the father’s study where his father said, “Son, I’ve been real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you’ve studied your Bible diligently, but you didn’t get your hair cut!”

The young man waited a moment and replied, “You know Dad, I’ve been thinking about that. You know, Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and even Jesus had long hair….”

To which his father replied, “Yes, and they walked everywhere they went!”
