It’s overcast and quiet. 42F, wind at 0-4 mph and gusting, AQI 5-35, UV1. Chance of rain 19% today and 10% tonight. It should stay this way until Friday evening and there’s a good chance of rain that night. After that the chance tapers off into showers, until by Tuesday it’s below 50%….

Yesterday started a little late. Something has set me coughing and coughing. I don’t think I’m sick, but there’s some kind of irritant in the air and it’s bad enough that I’m not even sleeping well. I get about an hour and a half and then cough for half an hour before I can lie down again. That meant that I was tired enough to not manage a lot. Mostly I was doing paperwork and sorting files for a new blog page.

Tempus made bread and did paperwork. I don’t know how far he got. I know he was playing on Facebook and YouTube for awhile. He’s still puttering in back and it’s nearly 2….. OK, he headed out at 2:15. I’m going to finish this, peck at sorting files and then head for a book and some embroidery.

Today I *have* to get the plants watered. I’m going to have to get Tempus to help. I still need him to fix the pricing gun, too, and then I can get more of this stuff into inventory. He’s going to be running errands on Friday, at least for awhile, so I need help today.

Waves crashing into Tillamook Rock Lighthouse on the Oregon Coast – by Jim Scott (This is the lighthouse that needed a major repair after the ocean picked up a 2-ton rock and dropped it through that tower that you see on top, taking out the light’s Fresnel lens and mangling the stairway and tower underpinnings.)

Lupines are represented on the coast by the Large-Leaved Lupine, Lupinus polyphyllus, (which is often the common garden variety and all over out here) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lupinus_polyphyllus and Kincaid’s Lupine, Lupinus sulphureus subsp. Kincaidii (which used to be called Oregon Lupine). The latter is threatened as they’re disappearing and are needed for an also disappearing butterfly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lupinus_sulphureus We also get the yellow varieties of this one on the coast. More on the main lupin species here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lupin These are tall showy flower spikes with a distinctive leaf pattern that bloom all summer into the fall. Some varieties of lupins (the “sweet lupins”) are eaten, but many require soaking in salt water for long periods of time to get the alkaloids out that could be poisonous. These were eaten by the indigenes, but no one has said how they were prepared. There’s a little here about the beans, which are being used as a vegan food, but have a high potential for allergic effects. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lupin_bean –Masculine, Fire, Moon – As far as magick goes, it’s not listed very many places, but its old name is “Blood from a head”. The word “lupine” derives from the word for wolf, as well. They are useful in magicks for any canine. In fact, I always include them in amulets for dogs or wolves. They can also be used to help with spirit communication with the canine/lupine totems. They have also been used in curse magicks for getting rid of things like cancers, or resistant viruses and bacteria or even for brain tumors.

feast 0128 Lenaia Dionisius theater

The Festival of the Lênaia to Dionysus was held in ancient Greece beginning on approximately this date. The Lênaia, which was held at the coldest time of year, was for Dionysus Lênaios, celebrating his birth from Zeus’s thigh and his emergence from the Underworld. It was a festival with a dramatic competition but one of the lesser festivals of Athens and Ionia in ancient Greece.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenaia (picture is the present-day remains of the Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus, Athens)

Full Moon occurs at 11:16 A.M. EST; It shines this evening in dim Cancer, below Castor and Pollux and almost equally far above late-rising Regulus (for North America). The traditional name for the January Full Moon is the Wolf Moon. [magickal name – Rowan Moon] During Full Moon, our satellite rises just as the Sun is sinking below the horizon and remains visible all night. Aside from bright stars and planets, the Moon is likely the only thing you’ll be able to observe, so let’s zoom in on some of the features visible during this phase. While the entire nearside of the Moon is on display at this time, it’s also directly illuminated by the Sun, which can wash out certain details. Some of the best spots to focus on during Full Moon include the craters Copernicus and its neighbor Kepler. Copernicus is located in Oceanus Procellarum on the left side of the Moon (when viewed unaided); Kepler is a bit farther to Copernicus’ lower left. The huge crater Tycho is also hard to miss, dominating in the southern region of the Moon with long, bright streaks stretching away from it. These streaks, which also appear around Copernicus and Kepler, are rays of ejecta — material that was thrown up from the surface of the Moon when these features were created, flying as far as 750 to 1,200 miles (1,200 to 1,900 kilometers) from their point of origin.

Use this photo to estimate Betelgeuse’s magnitude using Aldebaran and, with reservations, Bellatrix. Magnitudes are in parentheses. When Bob King took this photo on December 22nd, Betelgeuse was much more like Bellatrix than Rigel.

Zero-magnitude Capella high overhead, and equally bright Rigel in Orion’s leading foot, have almost the same right ascension. This means they cross your sky’s meridian at almost exactly the same time: around 8 or 9 p.m. now, depending on how far east or west you live in your time zone. (Capella goes exactly through your zenith if you’re at latitude 46° north: Portland, Oregon; Portland, Maine; Montreal; central France.) So, whenever Capella passes its very highest, Rigel always marks true south over your landscape, and vice versa.

Following in the footsteps of its fellow gas giant earlier this week, Jupiter is in conjunction with the Sun at 9 P.M. EST. It, too, will be visible in the early morning by mid-February.

Neptune (magnitude 7.9, in Aquarius) is sinking away low in the west-southwest after dark. Finder chart (without Mars).

Celtic Tree Month of Luis/Rowan, Jan 21-Feb 17, Luis (LWEESH)/rowan – The rowan, or mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia L.) is related to servceberries. The red berries were historically used to lure birds into traps, and the specific epithet aucuparia comes from words meaning “to catch a bird”. Birds are also responsible for dispersing the seeds. Rowans thrive in poor soils and colonize disturbed areas. In some parts of Europe they are most common around ancient settlements, either because of their weedy nature or because they were planted. Rowans flower in May. They grow to 15 m (50 feet) and are members of the Rose family (Rosaceae). They are cultivated in North America, especially in the northeast.

Imbolc Magick – Meditation on Cat.   Breathe deep… Breathe from your belly, from your core, your center… Inhale and become… Exhale and release… Release all things that do not serve. Anger. Fear. Resentment. Shame. Sadness. Let them flow out of your breath, down to Mother Earth… Breathe in and know that we all breathe the same breath…. Breath out and know that you are safe, surrounded by friends and Gods who will let no harm come to you… Breathe and let the cradling darkness of the Mother envelop you… Rest in Her mysteries as you breathe in… And out…

Floating in the Mother’s womb, you know that you are meant to go forward, to receive a message, to seek the path that She has set you upon… The cat has long been a guide and friend to Witches, and tonight we call upon the power of Cat to guide us to the Lady of the Crossroads who sees all possible pathways…

You hear a sound, maybe a meow, or a roar… You can feel the silent steps of the Cat coming to guide you to the Lady. The darkness fades a little, and as you look around you can see the Cat who has been sent to you. This Cat is your guide… Some of you may be guided by your own house cat, or one who has passed away… Others will be guided by their Cat totems, ranging from Tigers, to Lions, to Panthers, to Leopards, to Lynx’s. Let Cat come to you in the way it is meant to… Spend some time with this Cat… Ask its name and why it has been sent to you…

It is time to go to the Lady… Cat turns, and begins walking away from you… Follow Cat… Follow and know that it is leading you to the Lady of the Crossroads… As you walk with Cat, feel around you for the Direction that you are walking in… If you do not feel which direction you are walking in, you may ask Cat which direction it is taking you in… By paying attention to North, East, South, and West you will get a better idea of what Path you are being set upon…

Looking down at your feet, you see that Cat has taken you upon a Pathway… Looking around you, pay attention to your surroundings… What do you see? Are there trees, animals, birds? Are you near the ocean, a river, or in a desert? What do you smell? Hear? Let these visions come to you…

Looking ahead of you, you see a lady, cloaked in fire… Her red hair shines like the sun, and her eyes are as green as the deep waters… As you get closer, you notice that she is standing at the center of a four-way Crossroad… This is the Lady Bridget. Goddess of Fire, Inspiration, Poetry, Blacksmiths, and the Crossroads. She holds the knowledge of Pathworking and possibilities… Cat brings you to Her, and lays at Her feet… You are struck by Her beauty and obvious strength..

Let Bridget offer to you her words of wisdom… Ask Her any questions you have about the Path are currently on… Let Bridget show you the possible outcomes of your actions, and the possible alternatives…

Ask Bridget any last quick questions that you have for Her, and give Her your thanks… Cat stands, and begins walking down one of the Pathways in the Crossroad… Follow… Is this the same Pathway that you followed to meet Bridget, or a different one? As Cat guides you back to your physical body, is the scenery the same, or somehow altered? Are there any new smells or sounds?

You arrive at a shimmering black-misty Veil… Ask the Cat if it has any last words for you, and thank Cat for it’s guidance… Step through the Veil, and be cradled once again in the Mother’s formlessness…

In this darkness, you are within your own being… Breathe deep and allow yourself to begin slipping back into your physical body… Breathe and become aware once again of your physical body and your physical surroundings… Breathe and let your mind and soul reenter your physical vessel…

Begin to wiggle your toes and fingers… Breathe deep, and begin to slowly move your arms and feet… Roll your head from side to side… Breathe deep, and when you are ready, open your eyes.

You have seen many things in this Quest that will be of great benefit to you. Anytime that you need guidance on your Path, you may call on Cat or Lady Bridget and seek their guidance… If you were lead by a Cat totem, it would be a good idea to continue working with it… If you felt a deep connection with Bridget, you might wish to build an altar for Her, and continue working with Her.

Silliness – Jets Fan

A guy walks into a bar with a dachshund under his arm. The dog is wearing a Jets jersey helmet and is holding Jets pom poms.
The bartender says,”Hey! No pets allowed in here! You’ll have to leave!”
The man begs, “Look I’m desperate. We’re both big fans, my TV is broken, and this is the only place we can see the game!”
After securing a promise that the dog will behave and warning him that if there is any trouble they will be thrown out, the bartender relents and allows them to stay in the bar and watch the game.
The game begins with the Jets receiving a kickoff. They march down field stop at the 30,and kick a field goal. With that the dog jumps up on the bar and begins walking up and down the bar giving everyone a high-five.
The bartender says,”Wow that is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen! What does the dog do if they score a touchdown?”
“I don’t know,” replies the owner, “I’ve only had him for four years.”
