Daily Stuff 1-30-21 Martina of Rome

Hi, folks!

Minus Tide at 8:01 PM of -0.9 feet.

The shop is open only by appointment until the COVID #s come down, and we’re planning to stay closed until 2/1 and maybe another week after that. Watch here for notifications about that! For appointments contact us at 541-563-7154, anjasnihova@yahoo.com, on Facebook or here on the blog, or just leave a note on the door! Featured photo by Ken Gagne.

It’s completely overcast, although the clouds are bright from the Moon behind them. That also means it’s a lot warmer than it’s been. It should start raining a bit after 5am. 48F, wind at 3-21 mph and gusting, AQI 0-38, UV1. Chance of rain 94% today and 92% tonight. The GALE WARNING is over at 7am, but there’s a SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY from 7am today to 6pm on Sunday. Once the rain starts they’re predicting most of 3 inches before it turns to showers early on Tuesday. The rest of the forecast is more or less for showers with some possibly sun late Thursday and early Friday.

Yesterday started very sleepy. I had done about 3 hours of counseling in the middle of the night, then around 9am did another 4 with the spouse of the first person…. By the time Tempus woke I was wobbling, so he chased me back to sleep. I didn’t start getting anything really done until nearly 5pm. Still sorting pictures. I’m back into 2016, finally. Yeah, a lot of pictures…. although I got a bunch of pix of the grandbaby into her folder. https://ancientlightshop.wordpress.com/calendar/psychic-fair-information/grandbaby-trip-2-28-to-3-6-19/grandbabys-2nd-year/ Scroll all the way to the bottom for the newest batch. Dang, she’s getting big! We’ll she’ll be 2 in just over a month!

Tempus had to run a bunch of the errands. He missed on the PO, so that’s going to have to get done today. A bunch of stuff showed up all at once. …and bank…and paperwork, etc.

We had a really good supper last night. Tempus made mashed potatoes and we had those with pickled beans and beets and some of the pork roast. I got back to work on pictures and still have more to do. I’m in a spot where there are a lot of duplicates and the dates on the folders are kinda weird.

Today we have some folks coming in at 1pm to shop. Tempus is going to have to go around and pick up when he gets back this morning, so we’re both going to go short on sleep, especially since he has some errands to run in South Beach and Newport tomorrow morning. I have a class at 11am which I’ll probably miss and a meeting at 3pm. …and I have more to do on the photos. Getting tired of hearing about ’em, yet? Next up is the yearly House Capuchin cookbook. You’ll get sick of that one, too. 🙂

Tempus headed out at 2:30. Odd…. there was a whump that I felt in my feet… nothing showing in earthquakes… hunh….

From 1/30/16. “There’s a chickadee on the seedball pecking busily. He’s actually hanging from the bottom of it, completely upside-down! Best pic I could get of him.”

Today plant is Common Maidenhair, the Spleenwort, Asplenium family, Pictured is Asplenium trichomanes ssp. quadrivalens.) This is not the Maidenhair fern which is Adiantum family (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adiantum )! The Doctrine of signatures associates this plant with the treatment of diseases of the spleen because of the shape of the sori (the reproductive spots on the leaves). Asplenium nidus and Asplenium bulbiferum are often sold as decorative potted plants. It is used by herbalists as a Demulcent; Expectorant; & Laxative. (although it may have some cancer-causing chemicals in it and as an Emmenagogue (which helps to fix problems with the female reproductive cycle. At one point it was used in cures for syphilis. It even makes a good hair rinse. – Masculine, Saturn, Earth, – It is used in magics to cure an enlarged spleen or in any of the associated blood disorders. We made amulets at one point for a kiddo who had exploded his spleen in a fall and he’s all healed up. “Gravel” or stones in the spleen and liver can also be helped this way. It should not be used by women, except as a contraceptive. More on the associated plant for today’s martyr here:  Asplenium trichomanes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asplenium

saint martina of rome feast 0130Today is the feast day of St Martina of Rome, virgin and martyr, died 228c.e. –  An emperor wanted to marry her. When he took her to Apollo’s temple there was an earthquake that knocked down the statue, which then talked to her. She’s one of the ones that they did everything to, poured hot oil on her, tried to yank her apart with hooks, a lion wouldn’t eat her, etc. They finally cut off her head and instead of blood, milk flowed out. Ew…. Makes you wonder what the fascination with rendering people into component parts is…. More on her here: http://saints.sqpn.com/saint-martina/

Red Winter Triangle, Blue Winter Hexagon

Once it’s fully dark, spot the equilateral Winter Triangle in the southeast. Sirius is its brightest and lowest star. Betelgeuse stands above Sirius by about two fists at arm’s length. To the left of their midpoint is Procyon. Can you discern their colors? Sirius (spectral type A0) is cold white, Betelgeuse (M2) is pale yellow-orange, and Procyon (F5) is paler yellowish white.

At least half the stars in the sky have one or more stellar companions. That makes multiple-star systems, which are great observing targets, plentiful and easy to find. One of the best is Beta Monocerotis, located in Monoceros the Unicorn. Rising just southwest of Canis Minor at sunset, give this region an hour or two to climb a bit higher in the sky. Then search out magnitude 3.8 Beta, which lies roughly halfway on an invisible line drawn between brighter, easy-to-find Betelgeuse in Orion and Sirius in Canis Major. Although it appears as a single magnitude 3.8 star to the unaided eye, Beta is a triple-star system with magnitudes 4.6, 5.4, and 5.6. Their light combines to create the “single” star you see without optical aid. The three components, labeled A, B, and C from west to east, are fairly close: B and C are a mere 3″ apart, while A stands apart from the pair by about 7″. Based on this configuration, astronomers believe B and C orbit a common center of mass, while A orbits the pair. A small (4-inch) telescope with 100x magnification will have no problem showing you this gorgeous triple system.

Mercury is dropping down from last week’s good apparition in evening twilight, and it’s also fading fast. On Friday January 29th Mercury is still almost as high in the south-southwest as it was last week, but at just magnitude +0.5 it may be surprisingly hard to spot if you haven’t looked in a few days.

Celtic Tree Month of Luis/Rowan, Jan 21-Feb 17, Luis (LWEESH)/rowan – The rowan, or mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia L.) is related to servceberries. The red berries were historically used to lure birds into traps, and the specific epithet aucuparia comes from words meaning “to catch a bird”. Birds are also responsible for dispersing the seeds. Rowans thrive in poor soils and colonize disturbed areas. In some parts of Europe they are most common around ancient settlements, either because of their weedy nature or because they were planted. Rowans flower in May. They grow to 15 m (50 feet) and are members of the Rose family (Rosaceae). They are cultivated in North America, especially in the northeast.

Heaven midst your rage shall mingle pure delights.
And confidence of hope the soul sustain,
While devastation sweeps along the plain:
Nor shall the child of poverty despair,
But bless the Power that rules the changing year;
Assured, though horrors round his cottage reign,
That Spring will come, and Nature smile again. – Robert Bloomfield (1766–1823)

Imbolc Magick – Prayers

Brigid, gold-red woman,
Brigid, flame and honeycomb,
Brigid, sun of womanhood,
Brigid, lead me home.

You are a branch in blossom.
You are a sheltering dome.
You are my bright precious freedom.
Brigid, lead me home. ~Irish Prayer To The Goddess

The Shield of Brigid

Every day, every night
that I praise the goddess,
I know I shall be safe:
I shall not be chased,
I shall not be caught,
I shall not be harmed.
Fire, sun, and moon
cannot burn me. Not
lake nor stream nor sea
can drown me. Fairy
arrow cannot pierce me.
I am safe, safe, safe,
singing her praise. ~ Irish Prayer

A Candlemas Poem —from Casting the Circle by Diane Stein

Night of lit white candles
Darkness turned into light
Everything she touches changes

Feast of waxing flame
Fire of heart and hearth
Fire on the mind

Flickering of spark
Quickening of air
Warming into inspiration
Thawing in her innocence
Snow into desire

He shines for all of us
She burns within us all
Spiral heat of life
She shines for all of us
Within us all she burns
The fires to create

She shines in all of us
She burns us all within
Awakening arising is her need
She shines for all of us
She burns within us all
Her candle is our only source
