Hi, folks!

Partly cloudy and nowhere near as chilly as it’s been. 43F, wind at 5-13mph and gusting, AQI 5-32, UV1. Chance of rain 98% today and 80% tonight. Rain is supposed to start any minute now. At least it’s rain and not ice…We under a SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY from 7am today to 8am on Friday. The whole 10-day forecast is for rain: sometimes more (this afternoon, Friday night, Sunday night) sometimes less (this morning, Saturday night and Wednesday early). There could be wind on Saturday, early and mid-day Monday. Messy winter weather…..

Yesterday was kinda off. I was having trouble with coughing again, so I was up and down and didn’t get much done. Tempus just dropped when he got in. He slept until past 7pm. I’m glad that he’s getting caught up, but so much for being ready to open! So we’re putting it off. We’ll open as soon as we can, probably on the 18th at this point.

He worked pretty hard in the evening, mostly in the back, trying to get things to where I can work back there again. I still have to do some plant starts. …and I need to water again, after he helps me move some plants that are currently out of my reach.

I was writing. I’ve got a problem. I tried to get a couple of my card sets printed and the masters are AWOL. I have no clue what happened. One of them still had the roughs, but Tempus couldn’t find the other. <groan> I don’t want to have to re-create all that!

Today we’re going to have to do some kind of re-set. Trying to figure out what’s left to do and how to get it done before opening, along with all the other things that are going on. I just got a soup going. That’s going to be nice today. I needed to use up some vegetables that were starting to go. Tempus headed out at 2:15, so I expect him back around 7:30. Hopefully, neither of us will sleep as long!

Ken Gagne of the Alsea River, on 2/9/17. Just a little extra water, no problem….

Today’s Plant is the BlueberryVaccinium Cyanococcus (many species/varieties)! This is a fruiting bush that is related to cranberries, huckleberries and bilberries, has many species within the genus and many varieties within the species. Many fruits are called blueberries, when they’re not Vaccinium. Widely cultivated across the world, the fruit is high in iron and lot of micronutrients and even has resveratrol like red grapes. It may have effects on brain health, reducing stroke damage in experimental animals and memory retention in the aged. More here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blueberry – Put blueberries under the doormat to keep people you don’t want out of the house or plant them along the property line or next to the front walk to keep them entirely off your property. Blossoms can be dried and carried in an amulet, or wear fresh ones in your hair for protection from negative psychic energy near you. Eat blueberries and/or make blueberry pie or tea or jam to get the protection from psychic attack inside you, especially if the effects are leading to headaches and fatigue.

VirgendeLourdesToday is the anniversary of the date in 1858 when Bernadette Soubirous first saw an apparition of the Goddess, appearing as the Virgin Mary, in the grotto of Lourdes, which has been a shire of Kore/Persephone for a long, long while. More here:  http://www.wilsonsalmanac.com/book/feb11.html  and here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Lourdes I learned a new word researching this; “mantic”. It means related to divination or prophecy. The spring at Lourdes was described as “mantic” in the article. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/mantic

Canis Major

Sirius the Dog Star blazes high in the southeast after dinnertime, the brightest star of Canis Major. In a dark sky with lots of stars visible, the constellation’s points can be connected to form a convincing dog profile. He’s currently prancing on his hind legs; he wears Sirius on his chest. But through the light pollution where most of us live, only his five brightest stars are easily visible. These form a short-handled meat cleaver. Sirius is the cleaver’s top back corner, its blade faces right, and its stubby handle is down to the lower left.

Lunar Alpenglow and Orion – The setting Moon casts its light on the sacred Chana Dorje peak at Yading National Reserve in the Sichuan province of China. In the background sky, you can see the three belt stars of Orion lined up almost vertically above the pyramid-shaped peak. The Horsehead Nebula (B33) is visible near the belt stars, and to the right is the great Orion Nebula (M42). The red, glowing circular structure surrounding Orion is Barnard’s Loop. Copper-colored Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis) and blue Rigel (Beta Orionis) appear on the left and right sides, respectively. – Jeff Dai

Although the Orion Nebula (M42) is bright enough to see even with the Moon in the sky, nothing beats viewing this stunning deep-sky object on a clear, moonless night. By the time full darkness falls, Orion the Hunter is already high in the southeast. Find the familiar three stars of his belt and look to the lower right (south) of the bottom star, Alnitak (Zeta [ζ] Orionis), for a hazy patch of light. That’s the nebula, so large and bright that most can easily make it out with the naked eye. Turn binoculars or a scope on this target, though, and it really explodes. Buried in the center of the glowing nebula is the Trapezium Cluster — an association of young, hot, bright stars, whose winds are literally blasting away the gas and dust from around them. Can you see the dark cavity they’ve already carved in the surrounding glow? You’ll want to spend plenty of time exploring the nebula, which often appears greenish to the human eye. Look for dark lanes where dust blocks the nebula’s light and trace the irregular borders of the cloud as its glow diffuses into the dark sky around it. Astrophotographers find this a favorite — and easy — target, so it’s a great way to sharpen your skills before moving on to more challenging options.

New Moon (exact at 2:06 p.m. EST).

Venus passes 0.4° south of Jupiter at 7 A.M. EST. You can try spotting the close pair in binoculars just before sunrise in the eastern sky, with magnitude –3.9 Venus positioned to the lower right of magnitude –2 Jupiter. A little less than 6° northeast of Jupiter is Mercury, showing just a sliver of its surface as a 3-percent-lit crescent. Look 6° west of the solar system’s largest planet to find Saturn; the ringed planet is higher above the horizon, but a much dimmer magnitude 0.7. Note that these twilight planets are all challenging targets with the quickly rising Sun. As with other early-morning events this week, take care to stop observing with optics several minutes before sunrise.

Uranus (magnitude 5.8, in Aries) is roughly 10° degrees below Mars in early evening. In binoculars Uranus is a little pinpoint “star.” But with an apparent diameter of 3.5 arcseconds, it’s a tiny, fuzzy ball at high power in even a smallish telescope with sharp optics — during spells of good seeing. Finder chart (without Mars).

Celtic Tree Month of Luis/Rowan, Jan 21-Feb 17, Luis (LWEESH)/rowan – The rowan, or mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia L.) is related to servceberries. The red berries were historically used to lure birds into traps, and the specific epithet aucuparia comes from words meaning “to catch a bird”. Birds are also responsible for dispersing the seeds. Rowans thrive in poor soils and colonize disturbed areas. In some parts of Europe they are most common around ancient settlements, either because of their weedy nature or because they were planted. Rowans flower in May. They grow to 15 m (50 feet) and are members of the Rose family (Rosaceae). They are cultivated in North America, especially in the northeast.

Esbat ~ Snow Moon 2005

Most Benevolent and Beautiful
Silvered Lady reflecting the light
surrounded in white

Crystaled snowflakes dancing about
like last summer’s fireflies
They surround and dance with thee

The soft snow quiets the grounds
the silence of the forest
the icy blast of breath of winter

The crisp crunch of footsteps
of the forest folk
disturbs the deafness

as they gather, listening now to hear
the Gods own heartbeat
from within Goddess womb

the beating of promise
of renewal and future
redemption from past left behind

A shake of Her snowy mane
sends forth tiny reflective spears
reminders that change is part of life

Gathering these for remembrance
crystals we will lay out
to be charged anew in their light

For even not seen
The Gods light shines forth
from within the womb

And her brightness
is doubled as she shines
with love for her children

Lady of the Hunt
Queen of the lands
of crystals and snow

Let us walk
in the safety
of thy steps

As we move forward
in the land of shadows
and stillness

Blessed Snow Queen
walk with us these months
to welcome once more the Spring

Help us each to overcome
the barrenness which we have suffered
remove the burdens and free us

Let our lives renew
during this time of darkness
and time of leaving past behind

Let us reflect on past
and use it as a springboard
to envision and live a more productive future.

Helps us to dip deep
into the cauldron within
and utilize the gifts we are given

Help each of us to see
that we are our own best tools
and the solutions to our struggles lie within us

Guide us to use our gifts wisely
not to waste or doubt
but to walk forward strong in faith and conviction

Teach us to approach or practice
not as beggars and whiners
but as the Priests and Priestess we are

Help us to stand boldly
in the face of troubles and woes
and overcome our personal weaknesses

Lead us forth to Victory
in our daily life problems
and over our shortcomings

Help each of us to see
the renewal and rebirth
in our personal lives

Let each of us strive to become the bear
seek to be more close
with you this winter

And to rejoice together
as we waken the earth together
once more in the spring

Magick – A Brief Guide to the Spirits Themselves – Posted by Lupa on Monday, 14 October 2013 in Culture Blogs

So far I’ve been spending my time here setting the stage for introductory spirit work. But what about the spirits themselves? Who and what are these incorporeal beings that we’re trying to communicate with in the first place? The answers to those questions, in complete, are much longer and more complex than I can cover in one article. So consider this a very brief and incomplete overview of some of the sorts of beings in the spirit world.

Ancestor Spirits: These are the spirits of humans who have passed away. Some people feel the ancestors still exist in this world with us, unseen but around us all the time. Others believe they inhabit their own afterlife-world, but can be called on for advice or help in times of need. Depending on who you talk to, any family member, friend, or other important person in your life can be considered an ancestor—in fact, since we are all of the same species we all share ancestors. Others are more strict, keeping it specifically to one’s own immediate family and direct predecessors. Ancestor spirits are generally seen as protective in nature, though they can be angered if not propitiated properly (and, not surprisingly, what is considered “proper” is not universal).

Nature Spirits: This is a fairly broad category, since it includes not just the spirits of animals, plants, and fungi, among other natural things, but also spirits which are more abstract representations of natural forces. For example, one of the main parts of my practice involves working with animal totems. These are not just individual animal spirits, such as a gray wolf or a least tern, but archetypal beings that embody all of the qualities of the species Gray Wolf and Least Tern. Some people also consider faeries and devas (often taken out of their original cultural contexts) to be nature spirits, though the fey are also often thought to have originally been ancestor spirits, and the New Age conception of devas has deviated quite a bit from its Buddhist and Hindu roots. (This, incidentally, is part of why mythology and other cultural materials need to be part of your spiritual research!)

Malignant Spirits: These get the most press in pop culture; “demons” and other “evil” beings are supposedly everywhere, trying to eat our eyeballs or steal our souls or otherwise wreak havoc. In my own experience they’re a lot less common than thought, and as I mentioned in my last post there are ways to get them to go away posthaste. Often “evil” spirits are those which feel slighted and are trying to stop whatever’s bothering or hurting them; for example, nature spirits whose homes are being destroyed may try to be destructive in turn on those responsible. (Even pop culture picks up on this, given the popularity of the “haunted building on top of an old Native American burial ground and populated by angry ghosts” trope in horror stories.)

Ghosts and Haunts: Opinions vary as to whether these are proper spirits or just the impressions of spirits that have moved on. These are often attached to a particular location, such as a house or road, and often display the same behavior and appearance over and over again. Connecting with these beings can be risky since such haunts are often created through traumatic deaths or those who died with great regrets, so working with them can open you up to a lot of spiritual angst, to say the very least! This is part of why ouija boards get such a bad reputation—a lot people try them out for the first time in a haunted place, and open themselves up to a flood of bad memories and emotions that have been locked into that location for many years. It’s not the board that’s to blame, though, but what they’re being used to contact.

Servitors and Other Created Spirits: Some spirits seem to have come into being as various animals, plants, etc. evolved in this world. Others have elaborate origin myths attached to them, sometimes entwined with human stories. However, human magical practitioners have also been known to create spirits to help them. Known as servitors (among other names) these can be as simple as a spirit to carry out a single task, or as complex as a spirit (egregore) created by an entire working magical group to be a functional mascot or guide. These sometimes have set lifespans; others are essentially immortal and may outlive their creators.

Unaligned” Spirits: Sometimes people come into contact with spirits that don’t seem to be connected to any of the above groups, or to any particular other “flavor” of spirit. Sometimes all you have to go on is a name the spirit gives, and a quality it provides such as protection or healing. Sometimes they end up being servitors that gained enough independence to break free of their creators, or ancestors of families which died out. Other times they simply prefer to remain enigmatic and mostly anonymous, no matter their origins. While there are cases where malignant spirits pretend to be beneficial as a way to cause trouble, unaligned spirits shouldn’t automatically be suspect.

Do be aware that opinions also vary widely as to how safe it is to work with various groups of spirits, how best to treat them, how formal one’s spirit-related practices should be, etc. Since my specialty is in working with nature spirits, that’s where the next few articles will focus, and they will be firmly planted in my own self-create practices. However, feel free to adapt the material in them to work with your own preferred spirits if you like, and do research beyond just my writings here to see how others work with these beings.

Lupa’s Den: Practices for the Earthy Pagan

Over the years my writing online at Therioshamanism.com and elsewhere has wrapped itself around abstract concepts and theoretical discussions, stories and anecdotes and personal experiences. Here I’d like to have a little spot where I focus more on the how-tos, a sort of casual teaching blog. I’m a naturalist pagan, so look for some ways and means of working with the denizens of nature, spiritual and otherwise! (If you like what you see here, please feel free to visit http://www.thegreenwolf.com for more info on my books, online writings, etc.)
