Daily Stuff 3-11-21 Johnny Appleseed

Hi, folks!

Minus Tide at 5:45 PM of -0.3 feet. The shop opens at 1pm. Winter hours are Thurs-Mon. 1-6pm. Featured photo by Ronald Breeze.

Everything has cleared. There are only a few clouds to be seen and it’s turned cold. I’m hoping I don’t lose any plants tonight. I didn’t cover things. 37F, winds are calm, AQI 5-40, UV3. Chance of rain 7% today and 11% tonight. It’s supposed to be sunny and clear today and tomorrow, but quite chilly at night. On Saturday the clouds will roll back in and we’re due up to 1/2 an inch of rain on Sunday. After that, it’s all showers.

Yesterday started late and then went past in a rush. I was up around 9am, but still having brain-fog troubles, although not as bad as yesterday. I crawled back in next to Tempus after awhile and we didn’t move again until past 2pm.

We were no sooner at the shop and on our first cups of coffee when Amor called and talked for a couple of hours until I realized how late it was and that we still had laundry to do. He had an interesting cheese recipe for me that he’s interested in learning how to make and we had a lot of other things to go over, including his trip down here in May.

Tempus got himself and the laundry hustled out the door and I got to writing again. I was hardboiling eggs between. I’m setting up another batch of pickled eggs.

After he was back I got a nap and we got some supper and got back to work. I have to finish pricing a new order of smudges. If I remember right I have some to bag, as well. He got a couple of hooks up for me and we headed home. He’s gone for a nap and I’m going to follow as soon as I’m done here.

Today I have that stock to finish pricing and getting out for sale. I think I have another batch that should show up during the afternoon and if the cardstock does, as well, then I have to attempt to print headers again.

…and to water plants again. With any luck I’ll start having table space by late afternoon and I can start re-potting and getting starts ready. Everything is very leggy, which I won’t be able to cure until we have our tiny home up, so plants for sale may be rather late, this spring. Once they’ve had some time outside I’m going to have at least one batch of succulents.

motif plant Herb Wild Ginger

Today’s plant is Wild gingerAsarum caudatum – This is a different plant from the one usually used in magick, but has only slightly different properties. This is related to black pepper, kava and birthwort. – Masculine, Mars, Fire – This is used for “heating up” spells. While standard ginger is used in money, love, success and power spells, Wild Ginger is mostly used to add power, rather than on its own.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asarum_caudatum

feast Johnny_Appleseed_1

Johnny Appleseed, John Chapman, is usually thought of as an eccentric who wandered the early US throwing apple seeds around, but actually, he was planting orchards and left over 1200 acres of them when he died. An early ecologist, he traveled with a tin pot on his head for a hat. The First Nations tribes, even the hostile ones, revered him. He was a Swedenborgian and carried their literature everywhere he went. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Appleseed on Swedenborgianism here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Church

Zodiacal Light 3/9/2013 Robert Ede Invermere -British Columbia Canada

With no Moon in the sky at sunset, tonight is the perfect time to try spotting a dim celestial phenomenon: the zodiacal light. This cone-shaped glow thrusts upward from the horizon, spiking through Aries and Taurus in the southwest. It’s generated when sunlight scatters off dust left behind by comets as they pass through the inner solar system. At this time of year, when it appears after sunset, it’s often called the false dusk. To see this faint glow, you’ll want to be ready as darkness falls. The night must be clear and you should have a good view all the way down to the horizon. Viewing from higher elevations will increase your chances of success, as will making sure your horizon is dark and free of light pollution, which can wash out the zodiacal light’s signature. If you’re not successful tonight, keep trying over the next several nights until midmonth.

5 Clusters in Monoceros, NGC 2286, NGC 2302, NGC 2311, NGC 2324, and NGC 2335

Left of Orion and above Sirius is dim Monoceros, the Unicorn. If you’re a binocular observer, maybe you know of the showy star cluster NGC 2244, the long rectangle of a thing in the dim Rosette Nebula in Monoceros’s stick-figure head. But how about subtler, looser NGC 2232 some 10° south if it, just above the Unicorn’s forefoot? See the chart and discussion in Matt Wedel’s Binocular Highlight in the March Sky & Telescope, page 43.

MercuryJupiter, and Saturn wait for you very low in bright dawn. Jupiter and Saturn are getting a little higher and easier to see each morning, while lower Mercury continues to maintains its altitude and brightness. Look very low in the east-southeast about 30 minutes before sunrise, as shown below. With the sky that bright, bring binoculars. Mercury is about magnitude +0.1, Saturn is magnitude +0.7, and Jupiter is mag –2.0.

Celtic Tree Month of Nuin/Nion/Ash, Feb 18 – Mar 17, Nion (NEE-uhn), ash – the common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is a major tree of lowland forests in much of Europe, along with oaks and beeches. It grows to 40 m (130 feet) in open sites, with a broad crown reminiscent of American elm trees. Ash was and still is an important timber tree, and is a traditional material for the handle of a besom. The common ash is occasionally cultivated in North America, and similar native ash species are widely grown as street trees. Ashes are members of the Olive family (Oleaceae).

Ostara Magick – Ostara SpellsOstara – A good time for spells of love, healing and protection.

A protective egg Charm

Take an egg and, by poking small holes at each end of it, empty it out.  Fill the egg with Cinquefoil leaf and Dogwood, then tape the holes shut.  You can decorate the egg with Runes or symbols of protection, or you can leave it natural. Your home and property will be protected.

Dandelion Magic

Pick a white dandelion puff on the night of the full moon.  Charge the dandelion with a wish, call to the four quarters, and blow your wish into the wind.

An Ostara Love Spell

Now, a love spell is not to MAKE someone love you, Witches believe that that sort of manipulation of a person is wrong.  Love spells are done to show you your future mate in a premonition, or to draw the right love to you, of their own free will- basically giving Mr. or Mrs. right a gentle push in the right direction.

Read the spell over, gather the ingredients listed, then at night before you go to sleep, recite the spell and perform the actions as you recite them:

Of violets and Lavender, take each a few,
Enclose them with Myrtle of dark green hue.
Make them in a posy, small and round and bright,
May you see your true love in your dreams tonight.

Toss crushed eggshells into the garden and say:
For fairy, for flowers, for herbs in the bowers,

The shells pass fertility with springtime flowers.

Eat an egg you have empowered with a quality you desire.
Bless some seeds with a wish. Plant them, and as they come up, the wish is fulfilled
