Daily Stuff 5-14-21 Jamestowne

Hi, folks!

Minus Tide at 9:10 AM of -0.6 feet. The shop opens at 1pm. Spring hours are Thurs-Mon. 1-6pm. Featured photo by Ken Gagne.

Where did the rain come from? That was a surprise! It must have been a short shower, though. Foggy, now. 50F, wind at 5-9mph and gusting, AQI 21-33, UV7. Chance of rain 14% today and 13% tonight. SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY until 11am. Pollen moderate. Partly cloudy through Monday night, then showery. Highs in the upper 50’s. Only 5 fire spots today. The one near Salem is gone, but 4 of the 5 are trailing smoke plumes….

Yesterday went by quickly. We got coffee. We got mail. We got a FedEx delivery. Tempus worked on getting the rolling table ready for the summer. I worked on checking in new stock. He made bread and got a load of dishes done. …and the duck is finally thawing…. I’m hoping to bake that Saturday night.

Yesterday’s delivery was more crystals and the candy display. I’m going to fill the rolling table today and that will get the Pirate’s Treasure buckets, hats and masks out front again. Where they have been will be the display of sweets! I’m still trying to find a steady honeystick supplier.

Tempus headed out after supper (China Restaurant, yum!) and I got a long nap, then started back in working on checking in stock and figuring out how much to charge for some pieces. We have more of the tiny $2 bottles in varying shapes, a lovely fluorite point, assorted marbles and even a really nice ammonite pair.

I also got a lot of candy molds for the various thread waxers, marzipan and other things I do, plus some gummi bears shaped earring beads. Those are going to be fun to play with! Now, I just need to find the time to work on earrings…. Late in the evening I finally found a honey-stick supplier. It’s only 4 flavors, but they’re the natural ones like clover and orange blossom. I didn’t want the artificial color/flavor ones.

Today well be open from 1-6, as usual. Assuming that it doesn’t rain (where did *that* come from?) the rolling table will be out for folks to see. I have to keep going on the stock and displays inside. Tempus is supposed to do laundry, mostly fabrics that need to be pre-laundered before cutting out, but the new linen towels are in there, too.

Hmm… I think I’m going to go find my left0vers… 🙂

The local larkspursdelphinium trollifolium, and delphinium pavonaceum (which the Wiki article says is confined to the Valley, but I’ve collected out here….) are pretty flowers in shade of white, blue and purple. They’re called delphiniums after the shape of the nectary. More here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delphinium_trolliifolium and here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delphinium_pavonaceum  Other names are Larksheal and Staggerweed – Feminine, Venus, Water – The flowers frighten away venomous creatures and ghosts. Sprinkle between your eyes and a Litha fire to keep your sight clear. Use in rituals to call upon Dolphin energy.

Today is the anniversary of the founding of Fort James, which became Jamestowne, capitol of the Colony of Virginia until 1699. Briefly abandoned due to lack of supplies, the resupply brought women and more colonists which made the place a going concern for a long while. Initially, relations with the locals were good, but a bad diplomat as head of the colony caused the “starving time” when the colony was vacant and then later strong-arm tactics, trying to bully supplies out of the locals, set off one of the first wars with the Native Americans.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamestown,_Virginia

Today’s Astro & Calendar

Moon in Gemini enters Cancer at 6:30pm.

Waxing Moon Magick – The waxing moon is for constructive magick, such as love, wealth, success, courage, friendship, luck or healthy, protection, divination. Any working that needs extra power, such as help finding a new job or healings for serious conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams. Phase ends at the Tide Change on5/26 at 4:14am. Diana’s Bow – On the 3rd day after the new moon you can (weather permitting) see the tiny crescent in the sky, the New Moon holding the Old Moon in her arms. Begin on your goals for the next month. A good time for job interviews or starting a project. Take a concrete step! God/dess aspect: Daughter/Son/Innocence – Associated God/dess: Vesta, Horus. Phase ends on 5/14 at noon.

Now comes the crescent Moon back to the evening sky, higher and bolder in the western twilight each evening. Watch it pair with Venus, then Mercury, then skip a beat, then Mars. The Moon is these scenes is, as always, drawn about three times its actual apparent size. Positions are exact for an observer at latitude 40° N, longitude 90° W, near the population center of North America. And remember, the visibility of faint little objects in bright twilight is exaggerated.

In early twilight, spot the crescent Moon in the west-northwest as shown above. Upper left of it by about 13° (for North America) is little Mars. About the same distance lower right of the Moon is Mercury, and farther to the Moon’s lower left is Betelgeuse, the last bright star of Orion to depart as spring advances.

With such a slim Moon in the sky, tonight is a great night for hunting down the heart of a famous cluster of galaxies. The Virgo Cluster is located (predictably) in the constellation Virgo, which you’ll find in the south after sunset. Look for the constellation’s brightest star, magnitude 1 Spica, and draw a line to the northwest, connecting Spica and magnitude 3.4 Auva (Delta [δ] Virginis). Follow that like further northwest and you’ll reach the center of the Virgo Cluster, which is dominated by several large elliptical galaxies: M49, M60, M84, M86, and M87. (If that last galaxy sounds familiar, it’s likely because M87’s supermassive black hole was the first one caught on “film” when the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration released an image of the shadow around the black hole in 2019.) You can spot any of these bright ellipticals, which sit roughly 50 million light-years away, in a 3-inch (or larger) scope. They cover a relatively large field, so you’ll want to choose an eyepiece with a wide field of view. Alternatively, you can pump up the magnification and switch from target to target.

Mars (magnitude +1.7, in lower Gemini) glows in the west right after dark. It’s not quite midway along the line from Procyon far to its left to Capella far to its right. In a telescope Mars is a mere 4.5 arcseconds wide: just a tiny, shimmering blob.

Celtic Tree Month of Huath/Hawthorn, May 13 – Jun 9 – I am fair among flowers – Color: Purple – Class: Peasant – Letter: H – Meaning: Being held back for a period of time – Hawthorn – Like willows, hawthorns have many species in Europe, and they are not always easy to tell apart. All are thorny shrubs in the Rose family (Rosaceae), and most have whitish or pinkish flowers. The common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.) and midland hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata (Poiret) DC.) are both widespread. They are common in abandoned fields and along the edges of forests. Both are cultivated in North America, as are several native and Asiatic hawthorns. Curtis Clark

Scented Flowers

Silk and Paper flowers can be scented with your favorite essential oils. Be sure to place in the oil in an   inconspicuous spot so as not to stain flowers. Use 1 drop per flower.

Brought to you by AromaThyme.com – http://www.aromathyme.com

[Anja’s note: These are really nice if you use scents the match the flower, but especially fun if you use something exotic. When we’re burning things in ritual a paper flower scented with something that you like works really well.]
