Daily Stuff 5-17-21 Dea Dia

Hi, folks!

Last Minus Tide of the cycle at 11:17 AM of -0.1 feet. The shop opens at 1pm. Spring hours are Thurs-Mon. 1-6pm. Featured photo by Jo Leach.

The light rain was a bit of a surprise, again, but it’s almost more mist than rain. The fog is pretty thick and it’s very quiet. 49F, wind at 1-2mph and gusting, AQI 23-34, UV6. Chance of rain 24% today and 63% tonight. There’s a surprise rolling in from the Pacific which ought to give us some evening showers, and there’s a good possibility of early morning showers next Sunday, otherwise the forecast is for more of what we’ve been doing with the partly cloudy/small chance of rain. There are only 4 fire spots, but one up by the Columbia has turned into a wildfire. It’s about 400 acres….

Yesterday was long and tiring. Tempus was late getting back from the paper route, so we stayed at the shop. We both had trouble putting our heads in gear, but coffee helped. We had a number of people in shopping, although the last was around 4pm. In between we were cleaning up some boxes and getting stuff ready to go out to the trash pickup.

I spent time writing, then in the middle of the afternoon started cooking, first the leeks and pork dish, then the apple and eggs. They both sounded pretty odd, but both were tasty. Tempus actually liked the leeks, but never got to eat the apple and eggs because he was still full and he was weed-whacking out front.

We didn’t head home until past 9 and fell into bed, getting up and coming back into town at 2am. I’ve been working on this and trying to clean up all the links and such that I had open from my writing.

Today I’m not going to be at the shop. The duck is almost thawed and I can finish it with running hot water in. I’m going to stay home, get the duck baked and photos of it, work on plants and then do some sewing. Tempus will open the shop at 1pm and be here at least until 6pm, maybe later.

Today’s Feast is that of Dea Dia, a fertility goddess of Rome, whose worship was so old, even then, that the Carmen Arvale, Her sacred chant, wasn’t understood! She was probably an aspect of Ceres, in some way. Her priests were the Fratres Arvales (Brothers of the Fields) who were from Patrician families (traditionally the emperor was one) who were responsible for the worship of the “closer in” guardian deities of flocks, fields, home and ancestors. More on the priests here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fratres_Arvales on the Lares here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lares and on the chant here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmen_Arvale

Summer Sun – June’s long days reach their peak at the summer solstice June 21, when our star climbs highest at local noon. This view through a Hydrogen-alpha filter shows prominences, flares, sunspots, and filaments. – Ron Brecher

What is the oldest thing you have ever seen? For everyone in the world it’s at least the Sun and other objects of the solar system, age 4.6 billion years. Everything on or near the Earth’s surface is much younger. Next is Arcturus, which most people have surely seen whether they knew it or not, since it’s one of the brightest stars in the sky. It’s a Population II orange giant, age about 7 billion years, just passing through our region of the Milky Way. Amateur astronomers have globular clusters. Most are older still, at least in part. The white dwarfs in the familiar M4 in Scorpius have been dated at 12.7 ±0.7 billion years. But individual stars that you can observe? For that you want Bob King’s new article In Search of Ancient Suns, with finder charts. Assigning dates to individual stars from the first eras after the Big Bang is still iffy; astronomers have to work from the near-absence of heavy elements in their spectra. But a relatively nearby 6th-magnitude star in Bootes and a 7th-magnitude star in Libra, both in binocular range, await you these May and June evenings. They probably date from about 12½ billion and at least 13 billion years ago, respectively. These will probably be the oldest things you have ever seen, or will. The Big Bang itself is well dated at 13.8 billion years. One could pick nits. Pick a proton, any proton right in front of you, and it has very likely remained intact since the Big Bang’s first millionth of a second. And what a variegated history it has seen since then!

Mercury reaches greatest eastern elongation at 2 A.M. EDT, when it will stand 22° from the Sun. That makes tonight Mercury’s best evening apparition of the year. Thirty minutes after sunset, Venus and Mercury are still aloft. Venus, which is a bright magnitude –3.9, is nearly 6° high and sits 8.5° below fainter (magnitude 0.4) Mercury. Watch for them in the darkening sky, particularly as several other bright stars begin to appear around them: Betelgeuse in Orion, Capella in Auriga, and Algol in Perseus. Shortly before sunset, Venus passed 6° north of Aldebaran in Taurus at 7 P.M. EDT. Unfortunately, the star will set while the sky is still too bright for most observers to see.

Mars (magnitude +1.7, in Gemini) glows in the west-northwest right after dark. It’s less than halfway from Procyon (left of it) to Capella (farther right of it). In a telescope Mars is a mere 4.4 arcseconds wide: just a tiny, shimmering blob.

All are thorny shrubs in the Rose family (Rosaceae), and most have whitish or pinkish flowers. The common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.) and midland hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata (Poiret) DC.) are both widespread. They are common in abandoned fields and along the edges of forests. Both are cultivated in North America, as are several native and Asiatic hawthorns. Curtis Clark

(a Salem-Turnopia tale from MysticRaven)

Hi, Cousin Bertha!

Do you remember Eartha Sarsaparilla, that we went to grammar school with?  Well, she is back in Salem-Turnopia. I ran into her in the grocery store today, we parked our brooms next to each other. I recognized her name in Theban on her broom so I knew she was in there.  She asked me to go to coffee with her at the Cracked Moon Cafe’, so we sent our groceries to our homes via Witches Express.  They come and pick your stuff up if you call them on your cell phone.  If the item isn’t too big, they use flying carpet.  They have technology now so that the ride isn’t too bumpy, so we knew they wouldn’t spill off any of our groceries.  Too bad Lower Greybogg is too small to have the Witches Express.  You would like it.

Ordinarily, I would have suggested our waiting until tomorrow to get together, I was kinda tired from running errands.  She did seem pretty desperate though, and my Spirit Guides kinda urged me to go.  Well!  She WAS desperate all right.  Her parents are very snobby, and each is descended from a different member of the founding coven members of Salem-Turnopia.  Eartha let her parents think she was home on a break from college, but that is not the case at all.  She flunked out, and her parents are gonna totally freak!  They think their garbage cans don’t stink (if you know what I mean).   She really had a long, sad story to tell.  It all had a guy at the bottom of it, naturally.  And he not only wasn’t a witch, but he wasn’t even Metaphysical!  I mean, What could she expect?… There is no way he could ever understand her.

Anyway, to get back to the subject (you always say I talk in circles)… Eartha was madly in lust with this guy Ken.  So she had been skipping classes to be with him… as in really BE with him… you can fill in the blanks. Her school advisor told her that if she didn’t make a really good grade on all her finals, she was going to flunk out.  Ken really didn’t much care if she flunked or not, except for the fact that she always paid for everything. She tried to study but Ken always seemed to want to jump her bones whenever she opened a book.  So she decided to put some salt petre in his beer, so that he would be lethargic and she would be able to pass her tests.

Well, Eartha really wasn’t much better in Basic Witchery in high school than she was about focusing on her college classes.  If you remember, the rest of us were in Advanced Witchery by junior high!  She got out a little herbal kit that she had brought with her, to mix up a potion.  She had gotten the herbs back in grammar school and didn’t throw them away when they got stale, because she thought it was a waste of money.  (Besides, she probably didn’t know better).  So Goddess only knows what kind of concoction she came up with!  She told me that she threw in a few things to keep him in love but just not passionate for a few days.  She figured by then she would have aced her finals, so she wouldn’t flunk.

It did not have the effect she expected.  As you know, beer is fermented anyway and she had put both Salt Petre and Damiana in the same potion.  Of course, one is to supress sexuality and one is to bring it forward (if you will forgive the pun).  She gave it to Ken, and for awhile he was just fine.  He drank beer and watched football and ignored her, like a normal guy.  Then all of a sudden, he had a fit!  He started yelling and chasing her around their dorm room.  Then he tore off his clothes and ran down the hall, yelling cursing and upsetting everyone studying for the finals.  Then he went to the dorm laundry room and tried to cram himself into the dryer.  Eartha was so upset that she couldn’t study.  He finally fell asleep half-in and half-out of the dryer.  By the time Eartha had calmed down it was too late to study and she fell asleep.

The next day was the one just before the finals, so she skipped classes to study.  Ken went to his classes, so she thought she would have peaceful time to herself.  Nope!  He couldn’t be quiet in class, and went to the cafeteria for breakfast.  He couldn’t hold the tray straight, and wound up with bacon, eggs, and hot coffee all over himself. What a mess.  Then he decided that he would cook breakfast on the hot plate in their room, and he stole some eggs from the cafeteria when the cooks were busy.  He came bursting into the room while she was trying to study, so of course she screamed.  Then he got upset and started throwing eggs at her, and headed for the laundry room again, to wash his dirty clothes with eggs and coffee grounds all over them. He grabbed a beer (Eartha had spiked all of them with the salt petre thingie and forgot to throw the rest away), and went to the laundry room.

He brought a pair of jockey shorts with him to wear while his clothes washed.  But… the spiked beer started to get to him.  So, he took off everything and tried to get into the washer with his clothes.  (Wow, he must have a laundry fetish).  He had soap all over him.  He was totally out of it, and forgot about his laundry. He had fun sliding down the hall in his Birthday Suit and singing that old song, “Roll me over in the clover”… must have learned it from his dad.  So of course anyone who was trying to study stuck their heads out of their rooms and yelled at him.  When he got to the verse that said, “Roll me over one more time and do it again,” Eartha thought he had lust on his mind, especially when she looked out the door of the room and saw him sliding naked down the hall in a bunch of soap.

She locked him out and started looking for anything she could use for ear plugs so she could study.  Poor thing! She had forgotten that she’d left out the little suitcase her herbs and oils were in, and stumbled over it. She stumped her toe really bad, jumped up high, fell back down, tripped over the bed post, and landed hard on her fanny.  She cracked her tail bone, and had to call the paramedics.   It was hard for them to understand her, because Ken was out in the hall banging on the door and yelling, between verses of “Roll Me Over In The Clover”.

Eartha wound up in the hospital and missed her finals.  She couldn’t take a make-up test because she couldn’t sit down and had never been able to study, anyway.  Ken wound up being expelled for all the racket and wild behavior. As soon as she healed up enough to travel, her sister Anise came and got her.  She stayed at Anise’s for awhile until she was well enough that her parents wouldn’t suspect anything, they thought she was still at college.

Anise came with her to their parents for awhile so she could help watch for the mail so their parents wouldn’t know Eartha had flunked.  Oh, the poor girl was SO UPSET!  She told me that she was thinking about doing a spell to keep her parents from realizing she’d flunked.  She said she still had her herbs and oils!  YOW! That girl is a menace to humans and witches alike!  Can you give me some ideas on how to keep her from doing spells and potions?  The High Witch, Lady Emeraude, would totally have her banned or her powers stripped… if Eartha has any that is… if she got in another disastrous mess like she did at college!

PleasePleasePLEASE write back quick!  I have finally gotten off getting grounded just this past week, and I know that Eartha will drag me into something.  She isn’t a lush like Blanche, but still she just has a talent for trouble.

I love you Cuz,
don’t let me down!  Hellllpppp!
