Daily Stuff 6-3-21 Tunguska event

Hi, folks!

The shop opens at 1pm. Spring hours are Thurs-Mon. 1-6pm. Featured photo by Ken Gagne.

Overcast and very warm for night-time. 57F, wind at 1-2 mph and gusting, AQI 22-33, UV8. Chance of rain 7% today and 15% tonight. Most of this weeks is going to be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 50’s. There’s a medium chance of showers Friday night into Saturday and then the chance is picking up out toward the end of the forecast…. only a tiny chance, though. Only two firespots but there are 3 fires, Sycan River (679 acr 30%) , but a new one just south of us, MEHL CREEK (200acr, 5%) and one near the Dalles, MILEPOST 85, (120acr). Yeah, we had some hot weather….

There was a funny on the way home yesterday morning. In one of the small sand-mudflat areas next to the highway, the water is just deep enough for ducks to upend themselves to nibble things on the bottom. I got a quick glimpse of 8 duck-butts in a straight line!

DUCKS’ DITTY – Kenneth Grahame, the Wind in the Willows

All along the backwater,
Through the rushes tall,
Ducks are a-dabbling,
Up tails all!

Ducks’ tails, drakes’ tails,
Yellow feet a-quiver,
Yellow bills all out of sight
Busy in the river!

Slushy green undergrowth
Where the roach swim—
Here we keep our larder,
Cool and full and dim.

Everyone for what he likes!
We like to be
Heads down, tails up,
Dabbling free!

High in the blue above
Swifts whirl and call—
We are down a-dabbling
Up tails all!

Sign planter rose

We slept late, yesterday. I was up around 2, but Tempus slept until nearly 4. I worked on some sewing projects waiting for him and read, a little, and dozed, a lot. It was cool enough for coffee when he got up, so we did that and started in on the projects. We had to go through the bookshelf stats again, but hopefully he has enough to work with, now. We did some measuring and work on the curtains/valances, but not enough to count any more of those as finished, which was frustrating.

Strawberry

I finally got outside around 5pm to work on plants. I got the two new tomatoes and the marjoram into good pots, and had enough dry potting soil to refresh some of the plants that have settled a bit, but the blueberry, the railing planters and the two begonias are still waiting for more potting soil. The bag that Tempus got on Tuesday was what I call and medium, not a large bag. Oh, well….

Cardoons (for cheese)

The biggest problem was that my packets of seeds for bunching onions, pole beans and lettuce all got soggy when Tempus watered the other plants. That means they’re going to sprout within a few days and need to get plants, so he’s going to look for more potting soil this morning. I needed Tempus’ help to get the plants moved to their spaces, but we still don’t have the blocks and boards to lift them up.

The other variety of Cardoons (for cheese)

When we went back in Tempus started making a chicken salad for supper, which turned out to be tasty. I nabbed a shower at the point, being awfully sticky/sweaty, and then crawled into bed after supper and napped for a few hours.

Catmint

Tempus did get some sleep, and was out when I got up. I worked on an embroidery pattern that I’m trying to puzzle out and did a little finishing work on a couple of projects. I’ve also picked a pattern for the mask that I want to embroider (the outside only, it’ll have several layers, plus a filter) although I have to work it out on the computer, because it’s a cross-stitch pattern, not a blackwork one. We got back here just before 2 and Tempus headed back out almost right way.

The rose from a cutting from one of Jeanne’s is blooming!

Today we’ll be open at 1pm. I’m hoping Tempus will actually get up to storage. The list of things that we need keeps getting longer!

I have crystals to work on and that embroidery pattern. It’s a bulk route night, so I’ll have to evening to work on my marzipans. That project should be finished this week and the tins sent out to the recipients.

I also have a bunch of packages coming in over the next few days. I wish it were possible to figure out which carrier for some of them. When it’s supposed to be UPS you don’t expect it at the PO! 4 shipments have been shipping back to the sender because of just that.

290px-Russia-CIA_WFB_Map--Tunguska

Today is the anniversary of the day in 1908  that a massive explosion occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, knocking over 80 million trees over 2,150 square kilometres (830 sq mi). This is also known as the “Tunguska event“. This event, while beloved by UFOlogists and Conspiracy Theorists, most likely was some kind of meteoric airburst event, whatever the source of the material, comet or asteroid, but there are other possibilities…  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_event

Today’s Plant is BlackthornPrunus spinosa, sometimes called “sloe”, wish-thorn or faery tree. The blossoms, the fruits and the crimson sap display the three colors of the Great Goddess: white, black, and red. The dangerous long spikes and the red “blood” that flows in the veins of this tree enhance the dramatic effect of Her symbolism. Blackthorns are sacred to the Luantishees, which are Blackthorn Fairies who guard the trees. It makes great walking sticks, such as shillelaghs. The fruit and leaves contain Vitamin C, organic acids, tannins, and sugars. Otzi, the “Iceman” had fruits in his stomach, even though they’re pretty bitter for food. Good wines and liqueurs are made from the fruits. Steep the flowers for a diuretic, tonic, and laxative. Dried fruits can treat bladder, kidney and stomach ailments. Boil the leaves for a mouthwash or to sooth the throat from tonsillitis or laryngitis. – Feminine, Saturn, Earth – Blackthorn symbolizes the inevitability of Death, Good in magicks of protection and revenge, strife and negativity, the balance between light and darkness. The staves cane help in exorcism, to make wishes, in divination and general protection magicks. Being a plant that’s bad to tangle with it also symbolizes not only death and the conquering of death, but the wisdom gained in life and beyond life and can be used in magicks for the gaining of such wisdom. Today’s Astro & Calendar

Moon in Pisces enters Aries at 10:59am.

Waning Moon Magick – From the Full Moon to the New is a time for study, meditation, and magic designed to banish harmful energies and habits, for ridding oneself of addictions, illness or negativity. Remember: what goes up must come down. Phase ends at the Tide Change on 5/10 at 3:53am. Waning Crescent Moon –Best time for beginning introspective magicks that are more long term (full year cycle) A good time for beginning knot magicks to “bind up” addictions and illness (finish just before the Tide Change of Dark to New) and “tying up loose ends” God/dess aspects – Demeter weeping for her Daughter, Mabon, Arachne Tyr. Phase ends on 6/5 at 3:53pm.

Venus now shines alone, at the trailing foot of Castor.

Mercury has faded and sunk out of twilight sight, but Venus continues to creep just a tiny bit higher, toward the feet of Gemini as shown below. As night darkens, can you trace out the whole stick figure Twins before Venus sets? Binoculars can help you pick out the fainter stars through twilight, but remember how small a field of view binoculars show you (typically 5° to 8° wide) compared to the much larger constellation. And don’t forget Mars demanding attention!

A skygazer views Venus from the Giant’s Causeway near Bushmills, on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland. Giant’s Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption some 60 million years ago. – Miguel Claro

The planet Venus is having a busy week. Tonight, it sits just 30′ west of 5th-magnitude open cluster M35 near the feet of Gemini. As usual, you’ll want to catch the scene soon after sunset, looking toward the bright planet with binoculars or a telescope as the sky grows dark. M35 spans about 28′ and glows with a total magnitude of 5.3 — technically bright enough to spot with the naked eye, although its current position means it will likely set before the sky can darken enough for the cluster to stand out enough without optics. Particularly astute or experienced observers may even pick up NGC 2158, a fainter, more compact cluster of stars 15′ southwest of larger M35.

As twilight falls, other bright stars in this region will begin to pop out: Castor, Pollux, Procyon, and Capella. Mars is now nearly 6° southeast of Pollux and about 23.5° east of Venus.

Mars (magnitude 1.7, in Gemini) glows in the west right after dark. It’s that modest little firespark lower left of Pollux and Castor. Far-off Mars is no brighter than even Castor, the fainter of the Pollux-and-Castor “twins.” In a telescope Mars is just tiny blob 4.2 arcseconds wide.

The very old hawthorn at Saint-Mars-sur-la-Futaie, France, planted in the 3rd century!

Celtic Tree Month of Huath/Hawthorn, May 13 – Jun 9 – I am fair among flowers – Color: Purple – Class: Peasant – Letter: H – Meaning: Being held back for a period of time – Hawthorn – Like willows, hawthorns have many species in Europe, and they are not always easy to tell apart. All are thorny shrubs in the Rose family (Rosaceae), and most have whitish or pinkish flowers. The common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.) and midland hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata (Poiret) DC.) are both widespread. They are common in abandoned fields and along the edges of forests. Both are cultivated in North America, as are several native and Asiatic hawthorns. Curtis Clark

Journal Prompt – What does this quote say to you? – The last words in the story “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss are: “UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” What do those words mean to you?

Litha Magick – Prayer for Metta – This sets up a resonance through the repetitions that creates the magick. You can encourage people to repeat the “May they have a good life”…..It falls in 3 sections which should be separated by the indicated pause…just a breath or so….

May we be safe and protected.
May we be peaceful and happy.
May we be healthy and strong.
May we be content with life.

(pause)

There are those who put themselves in harm’s way for the rest of us. Let us bring Metta to them.

For all those who fight fires in our communities: May they be safe, peaceful, healthy and strong, and may they have a good life.

For all those who fight fires in our forests and tend our wild lands: May they be safe, peaceful, healthy and strong, and may they have a good life.

For all those who mind the weather and issue weather alerts: May they be safe, peaceful, healthy and strong and may they have a good life.

For all those who design and mind the traffic patterns of foot, vehicle or air: May they be safe, peaceful, healthy and strong and may they have a good life.

For all those who tend to our physical and mental health: May they be safe, peaceful, healthy and strong, and may they have a good life.

For all those who stand between those who would overcome the rest of us by physical force, coercion or violence, our soldiers, our police and all the whistleblowers: May they be safe, peaceful, healthy and strong, and may they have a good life.

For all those who tend the health of our Mother Gaia: May they be safe, peaceful, healthy and strong, and may they have a good life.

For our Mother Gaia without whom we would not exist: May she be safe, peaceful, healthy and strong, and may she have a good life.

For all those who tend the safety of our Solar System: May they be safe, peaceful, healthy and strong, and may they have a good life.

For all those who tend the safety of our Universe: May they be safe, peaceful, healthy and strong, and may they have a good life.

For those Watchers in the Outer Dark who tend the safety of all in this life and the next: May they be safe, peaceful, healthy and strong, and may they have a good life.

We honor them for their sacrifice that we may have Metta.

(pause)

May all beings of the Universe have fresh clean water to drink.
May all beings of the Universe have food & a home.
May all beings of the Universe have someone to share love with.
May all beings of the Universe know their true purpose.
May all beings of the Universe be well & happy right now.
May all beings of the Universe be free from suffering.

So Mote it Be!
