Daily Stuff 9-24-21 Feast of In-Gathering

Hi, folks!

The shop opens at 1pm. Summer hours are Thurs-Mon. 1-6pm. Featured photo by Ken Gagne.

Clear and 52F, winds are calm, AQI 31-34, UV4. Chance of rain 3% today and 14% tonight. Today should be sunny and warm and tomorrow only partly cloudy, but starting on Sunday rain showers are big in the forecast. It’s only a 50% chance at most at any one time, but right up through Thursday possibly 1 1/2 inches could land on us. Didja get your drains clear? Check ’em again! Then next Friday/Saturday should go back to partly cloudy. After today, highs around 60F. No smoke plume, 3 firespots. Hey, the Near Minky fire fell off the map! … so did some others… makes it 10 active fires….

Yesterday went pretty well, initially. We got some good sleep in the morning, gathered the laundry and headed for the shop. The sky was a lovely blue and the river and bay the color that the ocean gets this time of year, and all ruffled with the breeze. We got the shop doors open at 1:10. <sigh>

I started in on mail and messages and Tempus worked in back for awhile, then started looking stuff up online. He got some dishes done and then headed out with the laundry. I was working on checking in the new Candy Club order by them.

There are some fun ones in there! Witches’ Brew, Picking Pumpkins, Spooky Spider and Leaf Piles, just for starters. Tempus was surprised that they came with freezer packs in with them, but chocolate and taffy don’t do well with being melted, after all.

We had a few customers in, mostly were “just looking, thanks!”, but we did have a few sales. …and then my day fell in around my ears….

One of my students got word that her eldest is in the hospital for COVID, at 40% oxygen….We talked for awhile on the phone. What can you say in that situation? I know what I’d feel like if it were one of mine! It’s one of my nightmares…. She can’t go to her and they wouldn’t let her in the ICU in any case. We’ve got her on the energy list, at least. Please help out with that! https://ancientlightshop.wordpress.com/energy-list/

…and in spreading the word on that I found out that a long-time friend, one of the folks that we played recorder with in the Starfollower Consort for 14 years, has gone to hospice under pallative care. In addition to other health issues, she has developed metastatic brain cancer. There is no hope or help for this. Lucid periods are short. She sleeps a lot. This lady was on the energy list before for melanoma and she had survived that, but this one there’s no coming back from. She’s been a *good* friend, even if we’ve seen each other rarely since I moved to the coast. …and I’m never going to be able to get up to see her one last time…. so I sent word by one of the friends who is closer to let her know that Tempus and I are thinking about her and we’ll see her on the Other Side to play recorder again! I’m going to send a card.

…and I was a wreck. In being on the phone I was running late getting Herbs Workshop stuff together, and then the other news hit. Tempus walked in and I told him what was going on and he was pretty upset, too, and then Linda came in for Herbs, just as I was falling apart again. Tempus brought the laundry in, but had to head out for the bulk route at 9.

We didn’t get as far as I would have like in Herbs. We’re starting an Incense unit. Linda let me blather, bless her, until I had calmed down and then we talked about the properties of a lot of the resins. We’ll start next time with woods and bases and then hopefully make some Clearing incense, since we’re actually out of the stuff! After we were done with that I got the prices of the newer materials into the inventory and then got a nap.

Today is try…. 20? 22? on the tires…. Tempus is going to be late getting back. We’ll have the shop open at 1pm and he needs to get the boxes and picking material picked up before we do! I’ll be doing some cookery later (dilly beans!) and working on incense headers and inventory.

0924 Mell Supper feast

Today is the Feast of In-Gathering in England. It is also known as Harvest-Home, Kirn-Supper or Mell-Supper. This is one of many feasts going on at this time of the year all across Europe and the US that celebrate the gathered harvest. The picture is a Polish Feast with a name that also translates as “Harvest Home”. The original link to this broke, but here is a Wiki article:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvest_festival

plant pic miners lettuce

Today’s Plant is Miner’s Lettuce, Claytonia perfoliata (aka winter purslane, or Indian lettuce). It’s a plant native to our area, growing and blooming in our soggy spring and drying out and dying back in the summer. I’ve seen in re-bloom in the fall. It’s a leaf vegetable that can be eaten raw or cooked like spinach. It’s really choice in salads and very high in vitamin C. It got the name because the Gold Rush miners ate it to prevent scurvy, since they really weren’t eating right. Like any lettuce or most of the salad greens it’s Feminine and Water, but as any high Vitamin C food, its planet correspondence is the Sun. – Sprinkling it inside the home brings happiness, so it’s good in floor washes or new home blessings. Carry it with you for luck and to protect from violence. Put it into sleep pillows or add to a dream catcher to keep away nightmares. I’ve actually slipped it between the mattress and sheets for this purpose. More here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miner%27s_lettuce More on the genus here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claytonia

Today’s Astro & Calendar

Moon in Taurus

Waning Moon Magick – From the Full Moon to the New is a time for study, meditation, and magic designed to banish harmful energies and habits, for ridding oneself of addictions, illness or negativity. Remember: what goes up must come down. Phase ends at the Tide Change on 10/6 at 4:05am. Waning Gibbous Moon – Best time for draining the energy behind illness, habits or addictions. Magicks of this sort, started now, should be ended before the phase change to the New Moon. – Associated God/dess: Hera/Hero, Cybele, Zeus the Conqueror, Mars/Martius, Anansi, Prometheus. Phase ends at the Quarter on 9/28 at 6:57pm.

As the stars come out, look for 3rd-magnitude Delta Capricorni just below Jupiter. They’re 1.5° apart, about a finger’s width at arm’s length. Jupiter is 175 times brighter! How early (or more likely, late) in twilight can you first make out Delta Cap? It’s an interesting star: a magnetic white subgiant, spectral class A7m, nine times brighter than the Sun and closely orbited by a small, dim orange dwarf almost exactly once a day. The dwarf passes in front of the bright star every orbit from our point of view, dimming it by 0.24 magnitude. That’s theoretically discernable by eye — but without a near-match comparison star right nearby, good luck. The system is only 39 light-years away.

Arcturus

Bright Arcturus, pale yellow-orange, shines ever lower in the west-northwest after dark. The narrow kite shape of its constellation, Bootes, extends two fists at arm’s length to Arcturus’s upper right. Arcturus is where the kite’s downward-hanging tail is tied on.

To the right of the top of the kite, the Big Dipper is turning more level. And this is the time of year when, during the evening, the dim Little Dipper “dumps water” into the bowl of the Big Dipper way down below. The Big Dipper will dump it back in the evenings of spring.

The Moon passes 1.3° south of Uranus at noon EDT, although the pair won’t rise until about two hours after sunset. Uranus climbs above the horizon first, followed by the Moon about 25 minutes later. That 25-minute window is a great time to see if you can spot the distant ice giant on its own, although you will likely be somewhat hindered by the turbulent air that clings to the horizon. To find Uranus, first locate bright (magnitude 2) Hamal in northwestern Aries. Drop about 12° down from that star toward the horizon (southeast) to reach Uranus. It’s currently magnitude 5.7 and should be visible with binoculars.

Once the Moon rises, it’s nearly 6° from Uranus. Now several days past Full, the Moon has become a clearly waning gibbous less than 90 percent lit. Turn binoculars or a small scope to the terminator — the line where light and dark meet — to see features on the Moon’s eastern limb (west in our sky) start to fall into darkness. Peeking out from shadow is the western portion of the Sea of Tranquillity, bordered to the northwest by the Sea of Serenity.

Neptune (magnitude 7.8, at the Aquarius-Pisces border) is high in the southeast by 9 or 10 p.m.

Runic half-month of Kenaz/Ken/Kebo – September 13-27 – Ken represents a flaming torch within the royal hall, so it’s the time of the creative fire – the forge where natural materials are transmuted by the force of the human will into a mystical third, an artifact that could not otherwise come into being. The positive aspects of sexuality that are immanent in Freya and Frey come into play at this time. Nigel Pennick, The Pagan Book of Days, Destiny Books, Rochester, Vermont, USA, 1992, p. 102

Celtic Tree Month of Muin/Vine  Sep 2 – 29 – Muin  – (MUHN, like “foot”), vine – The grape (Vitis vinifera L.) is a vine growing as long as 35 m (115 feet), in open woodlands and along the edges of forests, but most commonly seen today in cultivation, as the source of wine, grape juice, and the grape juice concentrate that is so widely used as a sweetener. European grapes are extensively cultivated in North America, especially in the southwest, and an industry and an agricultural discipline are devoted to their care and the production of wine. Grapes are in the Grape family (Vitaceae).

Quotes

~   Laurie Oakes is a cane toad. – Paul Keating on journalist Laurie Oakes
~   Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your own house. Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next door neighbor… Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting. – Mother Teresa
~   Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man’s original virtue. – Oscar Wilde
~   The Leader of the Opposition is more to be pitied than despised, the poor old thing. The Liberal Party ought to put him down like a faithful dog because he is of no use to it and of no use to the nation. – Paul Keating on Andrew Peacock

’Tis the last rose of summer
Left blooming alone;
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone:
No flower of her kindred,
No rose-bud is nigh,
To reflect back her blushes,
Or give sigh for sigh. – Thomas Moore (1779–1852)
