Midnight visitor

Saturday night we went home and had an awfully good supper. Naan bread with cheese melted on it. Steamed brussels sprouts and the last of the casserole. We went to sleep later than usual (near 10) and I got up when Tempus did. I spent a little while being frustrated by glue, bits of paper and tweezers…. still trying to make the “dried herbs” string. I played on the tablet for awhile and was startled when I realized it was already 4am, so turned in at that point. I’m not sure when Tempus got in, but I rolled over and hugged him and didn’t realize it until I woke up at noon. 🙂

Visitor in a hurry

It was beautiful this morning! Not much sun, but warm and the breeze, while it was picking up, was fragrant with the smell of new leaves. I finished another string ball on the way into town. Once we were here I got messages taken care of, got the soup going, then started in on historical re-creation stuff. Mostly that was writing and pictures, but I went through a couple of boxes and collected up some things that keep getting left at the shop. …and then it started to rain and blow. <sigh> That put paid to any shoppers.

Lovage

Some of the bits didn’t land in the soup until after 4pm, so they didn’t get done. Tempus took off around 5pm to go to the flea market to see if they have the tool that he needs, (that’s what stopped the car repair). I was working on this by then, after demolishing a really tasty sandwich of his good bread, tomato, onion and cheese. I’ll probably still be working on my little “herbs” at home tonight after going through the book stack and hopefully get some more of these “sacks” done.

Seed start pots….waiting on seeds.

Today we’re back to more normal activities. We got a bunch of books on the shelves over the weekend, so they’re starting to look full again, and there’s a whole stack for the library. …and I have writing to do. Oof….

Sambucus_caerulea_7997

Today’s plant is Blue ElderberrySambucus cerulea. It’s a rather wild shrub that can be trained into a small tree, with icky-smelling white flowers that then produce dark fruits that appear blue because of a whitish coating on them. In Oregon it grows mostly from the valley out to the coast with some isolated pockets in the Eastern part of the state. There’s a lot of folklore surrounding the tree. “In some areas, the “elder tree” was supposed to ward off evil influence and give protection from witches, while other beliefs say that witches often congregate under the plant, especially when it is full of fruit. In some regions, superstition, religious belief, or tradition prohibits the cutting of certain trees for bonfires, most notably in witchcraft customs the elderberry tree; “Elder be ye Lady’s tree, burn it not or cursed ye’ll be” – A rhyme from the Wiccan rede [poem]. If an elder tree was cut down, a spirit known as the Elder Mother would be released and take her revenge. The tree could only safely be cut while chanting a rhyme to the Elder Mother.” From Wikipedia – Feminine, Venus, Water – The flowers are used for Crossing the Bridge rituals. Carry for protection and to prevent rheumatism and toothache. Dried berries are helpful in sleep pillows. All parts are good for protection. Grow near the home for prosperity. Magic wands and flutes are often made from this wood.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambucus_ceruleaorhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambucus

feast 0404 RedSquare_SaintBasile_(pixinn.net)

Today’s Feast is the first mention of Moskva (Moscow, short for Grad Moskva, “big city on the Moscow River”) in history The first reference to Moscow dates from 1147 when Yuri Dolgorukiy called upon the prince of the Novgorod-Severski to “come to me, brother, to Moscow”. It’s the largest city in Russia, about the 6th largest in the world. It’s been burned to the ground several times (once by its own populace in the Napoleonic Wars). The kreml (Kremlin) was built as a wooden stockade about 7 years after the first mention and has grown to a huge complex of palaces and government buildings. Almost 20% of the population of Moskva, calls itself, “Spiritual, but not religious” and about 1% are Rodnoveri, the pagan faith “ancestral faith”.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow …and there have been huge protests most days since the bit started with Ukraiina!

Spring hours are 1-6pm Thurs.-Mon., although we’re often here later as the days get longer. Need something off hours? Today’s Astro & Calendar

Moon in Taurus enters Gemini at 8:04pm.

Waxing Moon Magick – The waxing moon is for constructive magick, such as love, wealth, success, courage, friendship, luck or healthy, protection, divination. Any working that needs extra power, such as help finding a new job or healings for serious conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams. Phase ends at the Tide Change on 4/16 at 11:55am. Diana’s Bow – On the 3rd day after the new moon you can (weather permitting) see the tiny crescent in the sky, the New Moon holding the Old Moon in her arms. Begin on your goals for the next month. A good time for job interviews or starting a project. Take a concrete step! God/dess aspect: Daughter/Son/Innocence – Associated God/dess: Vesta, Horus. Phase ends on 4/5 at 11:24am.

The waxing crescent Moon passes the Pleiades, Aldebaran, and Aldebaran’s surrounding Hyades. (The scene is drawn for just after the end of twilight, which may or may not be at 9 pm where you live.)

This evening the waxing crescent Moon hangs to the lower left of the Pleiades, as shown above. To their upper left, Aldebaran forms one tip of the Hyades’s V asterism. The V is vertical when it descends in the west in early spring, after lying horizontal in the east in late fall and early winter. We’re gearing up for a big show: Mars passes 0.6° south of Saturn at 3 P.M. PDT. Although both planets are below the horizon at that time, they will grow even closer in the subsequent hours. Check back tomorrow for the best early-morning view as these two planets make a close (apparent, of course) pass.

The Hunter rises – Two astrophotographers capture Orion the Hunter as it rises. This 30-second exposure shows the brilliant constellation — with ruddy Betelgeuse appearing significantly brighter than it does currently — along with the Orion Nebula (M42) to the lower right of the Hunter’s Belt, the Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237) at bottom left, and the huge red partial circle known as Barnard’s Loop. http://www.messier.seds.org/xtra/ngc/b-loop.html

Since you’ll want to be up early tomorrow morning, tonight’s observing can be done right after sunset, when the Rosette Nebula in Monoceros is some 50° high in the southwestern sky. This gorgeous deep-sky object is one of the most famous diffuse nebulae in the sky, and actually comprises both nebulae and a young open star cluster, NGC 2244. You’ll find your target just 2.2° northeast of 4th-magnitude Epsilon (ϵ) Monocerotis. Even a small scope will capture some two dozen stars. Bump up your aperture and even more will appear. If you want to spot the nebulosity that surrounds them, consider switching back to low power and swapping in a nebula filter to reduce the stars’ glare and bring out the surrounding clouds of dust and gas instead. This object is a favorite of astrophotographers, so if you’re so inclined, give it a go!

Uranus (magnitude 5.9 in Aries) is disappearing into the afterglow of sunset.

Celtic Tree Month of Fearn/Alder, Mar 18 – Apr 14. Fern (FAIR-n) Alder – The common alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertner) is common along lowland rivers, where it grows with aspens, poplars, and willows. Like willows, alders sprout from stumps. This allows them to regenerate after heavy flooding. In protect sites they may grow to 20 m (65 feet) tall. Their leaves are more blunt-tipped than most North American alders, which look more like the grey alder (A. incana (L.) Moench). This species is more common in the mountains of Europe, and is not restricted to moist soils. Like ashes, European alders are not widely cultivated in North American (they are often sold as black alders), but several native species are. Alder wood is said to resist rotting when it is wet, and was the wood of choice for pilings in many regions. Alders are members of the Birch family (Betulaceae).

THE BIRTH OF LOVEWilliam Wordsworth

WHEN Love was born of heavenly line,
What dire intrigues disturbed Cythera’s joy!
Till Venus cried, “A mother’s heart is mine;
None but myself shall nurse my boy,”

But, infant as he was, the child
In that divine embrace enchanted lay;
And, by the beauty of the vase beguiled,
Forgot the beverage–and pined away.

“And must my offspring languish in my sight?”
 (Alive to all a mother’s pain,
The Queen of Beauty thus her court addressed)
“No: Let the most discreet of all my train
Receive him to her breast:
Think all, he is the God of young delight.”

Then TENDERNESS with CANDOUR joined,
And GAIETY the charming office sought;
Nor even DELICACY stayed behind:
But none of those fair Graces brought

Wherewith to nurse the child–and still he pined.

Some fond hearts to COMPLIANCE seemed inclined;
But she had surely spoiled the boy:
And sad experience forbade a thought
On the wild Goddess of VOLUPTUOUS JOY.

Long undecided lay th’ important choice,
Till of the beauteous court, at length, a voice
Pronounced the name of HOPE:–The conscious child
Stretched forth his little arms, and smiled.

‘Tis said ENJOYMENT (who averred
The charge belonged to her alone)
Jealous that HOPE had been preferred
Laid snares to make the babe her own.

Of INNOCENCE the garb she took,
The blushing mien and downcast look;
And came her services to proffer:
And HOPE (what has not Hope believed!)
By that seducing air deceived,
Accepted of the offer.

It happened that, to sleep inclined,
Deluded HOPE: for one short hour
To that false INNOCENCE’S power
Her little charge consigned.

The Goddess then her lap with sweetmeats filled
And gave, in handfuls gave, the treacherous store:
A wild delirium first the infant thrilled;
But soon upon her breast he sunk–to wake no more.

Silliness – Interesting Pets

A man is driving down the highway and passes a state motorcycle officer.
The officer notices the man and also sees that he has 4 penguins in the backseat of the car. The officer chases down the car and pulls the man over, and after a short inspection of the vehicle says to the driver “what are you doing with 4 penguins in your car?”
To which the man replies “Just taking them for a ride officer.”
Visibly upset, the cop instructs the man to take the penguins to the zoo.
The next day the same man is driving down the same highway and is spotted by the same motorcycle cop. Again the cop gives chase and pulls the car over and upon inspection sees the same 4 penguins in the backseat only this time the penguins are wearing bright colored swim trunks and sun glasses.
The cop, really ticked off this time, says, “I thought I told you to take those penguins to the zoo yesterday”
The man smiles and replies, “I did! They liked that so much that today I decided to take them to the beach!”
