A Prayer for Earth Day
May all the healers of the earth find their own healing. May they be fueled by passionate love for the earth.
May they know their fear but not be stopped by fear. May they feel their anger and yet not be ruled by rage. May they honor their grief but not be paralyzed by sorrow.
May they transform fear, rage, and grief into compassion and the inspiration to act in service of what they love.
May they find the help, the resources, the courage, the luck, the strength, the love, the health, the joy that they need to do the work.
May they be in the right place, at the right time, in the right way.
May they bring alive a great awakening, open a listening ear to hear the earth’s voice, transform imbalance to balance, hate and greed to love.
Blessed be the healers of the earth. – – An excerpt from Starhawk’s book, The Earth Path, Happy Earth Day, today and everyday!
[posting at 6pm] Rain gauge at noon on 4/24 – Dry. Sunshine hardly touched by cloud! Gosh, it’s been a pretty day! 58F, wind at 0-12mph and gusting, AQI 13-41, UV5. Chance of rain 63% today and 51% tonight. It’s supposed to get showery before midnight with a couple of spots of light rain, ending mid-morning(52/44), then cloudy after that. Tomorrow(50/41), rain off and on all day. Wed(52/41) just cloudy, dry. Thu(51/43) cloudy until mid-afternoon, then showers, Fri(53/44) just clouds, Sat-Mon(53/43) showers. Tue(56/44) partly cloudy. 1 firespot.
Saturday evening was quiet. We had leftovers and then just turned in. I woke, coughing, though and it took me until 5am to actually get some more sleep. Tempus had a decent time on the paper route and got in at a good time for Sunday.
I got to spend a little time in the garden before we headed in to town. I’ve gotten more seeds in, mostly peas and radishes, but I also weeded the big planter of iris of all the Stinky Bob that was growing in it, then added some more soil. I’m going to get it flattened out and plant the goosefoots in there.
It was a pretty day with the sky a soft blue from haze and the only clouds were tiny puffs except over the ocean. Once we were at the shop, I finished processing the photos from the last few days, updated my tablet and then started in on the “different day” stuff. Pretty much all I got done, other than chatting with House people on Facebook was a little embroidery.
Tempus got some “stick” incense burners prepped for sale. Inexpensive stuff always needs a little work and he had to clear the incense stick holes so they could be used. After that he went out to work on the car.
The shop was pretty busy. Lots of people from the valley taking advantage of the nice weather. We’ve been able to have the shop door open for several days in a row. Eventually I started working on this as well as finding some youtubes for the House newsletter.
Today will be a normal day. I have more earrings to get inventoried….started that on Saturday. More books… more plant watering…. We’ll be open at 1pm.
Today’s plant, sacred to both St. Dorothea (patron saint of florists, which is the attribution that you usually see) and to Aphrodite, is the Jacinth or blue Hyacinth, Hyacinthus orientalis. It is highly poisonous, but has a use or two in the herbalist’s pharmacopeia. It is a lovely plant with a sweet scent that is a garden favorite. It hybridizes easily and will propagate itself in the right environment. – Male, Venus, Water – Promotes happiness, peace of mind and peaceful sleep. Attracts love, luck, and good fortune. Named for Hiakinthos, Greek God of homosexual love, this is the patron herb for gay men. Guards against nightmares when used as an oil, burned as incense, or included in dream pillows. Carry in amulet or sachet to ease grief or the pain of childbirth. More on this plant here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyacinthus_orientalis or here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyacinth_%28plant%29 and on St. Dorothea here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothea_of_Caesare
Today is the date in 1986 when the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near Chernobyl, Ukrainian SSR, suffered a steam explosion, resulting in a fire, a nuclear meltdown, and the evacuation and resettlement of over 336,000 people around Europe. It apparently started from an unauthorized experiment, a couple of large power surges and then graphite being exposed to air, which caused it to catch fire. The long-term effects are pretty horrendous and haven’t been caught up with, yet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_Nuclear_Power_Plant More on the disaster itself here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disaster …and worse, during this invasion of Ukraine, the Russians soldier were directed to dig trenches in the contaminated area. Many are now dying or have died of radiation poisoning and they also managed to set the forest around the plant on fire. The smoke plume has headed into Russia and many people in villages in the path are also dying. It’s being reported in EU news, but not so much in the US.

If evening observing is more your speed, April nights are a great time to check out Coma Berenices, already some 40° high in the east at sunset and still rising. This lesser-known star pattern houses eight Messier objects and numerous other treasures, including the colorful double star 24 Comae Berenices, which sits in the relatively sparse southern region of the constellation. Its two components are 20″ apart and shine at magnitude 5.2 and 67 — easy to spot with any small scope. Their reported colors range from white to yellow and blue or even orange and green, depending on the observers’ eyes. If you’re after telescopic targets with a little more wow factor, you’re in luck: M100 is a stunning grand design spiral galaxy in southwestern Coma Berenices. It shines at magnitude 9.4 and is one of the brightest members of the nearby the Coma-Virgo cluster of galaxies. M100 stretches about 7′ by 6′ across and is nearly face-on, showing off its winding arms and bright central bulge in larger (8-inch-plus) scopes. You’ll find this lovely target a little less than 2° east-northeast of 5th-magnitue 6 Comae Berenices.
The Moon passes 4° south of Mars at 6 P.M. EDT today. Earlier in the morning when both are visible before sunrise, its crescent floats in Aquarius, sitting south of a line connecting Mars and Saturn. Mars and Saturn lie about 8.5° to the Moon’s northeast and northwest, respectively.
Mars and Saturn glimmer to the upper right of Jupiter and Venus, in that order. They’re vastly fainter, identical now at magnitude +0.9. Mars, however, is more orange than pale yellow Saturn. Each morning they’re a little farther from Venus and from each other. The Venus-Mars-Saturn line is 25° long on the morning of April 23rd and 33° long by the 30th. The three stay about equally spaced from each other.

Celtic Tree Month of Saille/Willow, Apr 15 – May 12 – The Willow in the Tree alphabet stands for the female and lunar rhythms of life. She is water-seeking, thriving from preference on the damp margins of lakes and streams or across the low-lying water meadows. Water and the tidal movements of the sea are governed by the pull of the moon. The moon in its monthly rhythms is female, contrasting with the male sun’s daily and yearly turnings. In several ways, the Celts held women in higher regard than we do today. On the material level, women were property owners, and whoever controlled the property controlled the marriage. Women of all types and ages appeared in the Celtic pantheon, the spiritual strength and life-giving qualities given by both female and male recognized equally. There were colleges of Druidesses – learned women and teachers – respected equally for their gifts of see-ship, often expressed through dreams, or night visions.

TO F. C. iST April 1876.
Now if to be an April Fool
Is to delight in the song of the thrush,
To long for the swallow in air’s blue hollow,
And the nightingale’s riotous music-gush.
And to paint a vision of cities Elysian
Out away in the sunset-flush —
Then I grasp my flagon and swear thereby.
We are April Fools, my Love and I.
And if to be an April Fool
Is to feel contempt for iron and gold,
For the shallow fame at which most men aim—
And to turn from worldlings cruel and cold
To God in His splendour, loving and tender.
And to bask in His presence manifold —
Then by all the stars in His infinite sky.
We are April Fools, my Love and I. –Mortimer Collins (1827–76)

The energy is unmistakable – green, electric, almost exploding with life – yes, it’s Beltanetide again. Senses come alive – it’s impossible not to be aware of it if you are at all connected to the natural world – and with the joy, the aliveness, the final leaching away of winter’s numbness, we are born into the realm of feeling again.
In our rituals, writings and conversations, Pagans tend to emphasize the sexual aspect of Beltane, a Sabbat that celebrates the sensual coming together of lovers, of Earth and Sun to yield the Harvest. And indeed, the sign of Taurus, under which Beltane falls, is ruled by Venus, the planet of love. But Taurus is also very much about being fully in the body, rooted on the Earth, and the spiritual work that can be done around Beltane encompasses but is not defined by sexuality. It is defined by sensuality. To live fully on the Earth, to create a life of joy, beauty and purpose, we must honor the body of the Earth, and that honoring must start with our own bodies. It can begin nowhere else. If we do not make a point of learning to love, nurture and honor our feeling bodies as the sacred creations of our souls and spirits, we will not be able to make a true connection with the Earth and with each other – we will not be able to create the life and the world that we want.
Unfortunately, in the world we live in, learning to love our bodies is not an easy task. Millennia of misguided religious marginalization of the body and repression of sexuality have led to societies in which women are at best still fighting for full rights and at worst have their lives and bodies fully controlled by men, and the bodies of men and women both are considered legitimate fodder for war. Sexual abuse is rampant, unrealistic images of so-called bodily perfection are paraded in front of us daily and our health is compromised by sedentary, fluorescent-lit cube living and processed, pesticide-tainted food.
But this is changing, as it must. And we have the most powerful force possible at our disposal to mediate this change so that we can create a society that values peace, freedom and relationship. That force is our connection with the Earth, which lets us know that our birthright is a life of joy, creativity and caring. Once we touch the joy that is at the heart of that connection with the Earth and allow ourselves to feel it, we magnify it many times, and then, with that energy, we create, we make magic. That’s what magic is, after all – creating form and content in our lives from intent and raw energy.
Those who are skilled in the ways of magic know that magical creation is not confined to ritual. Our magical ability is inseparable from our daily lives. Because we practice patterning and working with energy, our personal energy field becomes strong, and that energy affects the world around us every moment of every day.
All of us, magically skilled or not, have a field of energy that surrounds us – call it an aura, or personal chi – and that energy, like a string on a guitar, both changes and is changed by the energy given off by the other strings. This is how our mass consensus reality is created. As magicians and shamans, we know the creation of physical reality begins on the energetic plane, and that our bodies and brains are the tools that shape and bring that energy into the world. As magicians and shamans, we practice keeping our personal energy coherent and strong. We know the importance of intent. So when we tap fully into the power of the Earth and modulate that power through our bodies and intent, we bring a level of joyful energy to the creation of mass consensus reality that, over time and with cooperation, cannot help but change the world we live in. But to do this well, we must be fully in our bodies, and to be fully in our bodies, we must be not just able but willing to feel – both physical sensation and emotion — in the face of a mass reality that in many, many ways encourages feelings of pain and despair. It can be hard to cope.
To dare to really feel, both physically and emotionally, is essential to effective magic, as is the ability to relax and let the Universe work through you. Our bodies and our emotions are inextricably intertwined, one always affecting the other. When we can let ourselves feel, relax, and bask in our sensual connection with the Earth, we are free, creative, and move through our lives with clear intent and a deep connection to Nature and Spirit. But sometimes, our crazy world can make it all too easy to shut down. We look at the news, or just around us, and see that while scientists are unraveling the secrets of life and the universe, we are still, apparently, unable to fathom that secret of our own soul, the open secret that love and joy are Divine gifts that are ours to claim on Earth. We are free to choose and to explore in this embodied life, our souls held safe in the eternity of the greater consciousness of Source – which is also “known by many other names”; The Cauldron of Cerridwen, the Tao, Nirvana, Brahma, Dryghten. The choices we make – each and every one, each and every day – shape our energy and make up the personal creation of a lifetime. This means that for a magician or shaman, allowing ourselves to keep our feelings shut down in a fearful, reactive response to the world around us is shirking our responsibility, our heritage and our birthright.
When we open to feeling, often what we feel first is pain, so courage is needed to pursue this path. In the face of our pain, our sense of joy and aliveness retreat. Stored in our bodies as well as our minds, pain – if we ignore and do not face it – restricts us. We carry the energetic imprint of pain in our auras, and fear of encountering more pain adds the imprint of fear to the energy that we are projecting as we move through our lives. Avoiding what we fear, we clamp down on our ability to feel, both physically and emotionally. And in doing so, we lock the ability to feel joy, aliveness and our connection with the Divine into our own, internal Pandora’s Box.
We have the power to change this; we have a choice. Will we cringe before the pain we feel and see around us and try to hide from it? Or will we do the work to open to and be aware of our connection to the Divine within us, which will help us find the courage to change ourselves and our world? Without the only true safety – the internalized connection with the Source – we will fear too much to truly feel.
For many of us, healing enough to allow ourselves to feel fully is a long road, requiring considerable attention and fortitude. We face pain, anger, shame, guilt or other unpleasant emotions that are stored in our bodies, hearts and minds, and transform or release them. And then we do it again. And again. We go back and strip away more and more layers of the varnish that holds the imprint of pain in place, and each time we do this, we feel more and more free, connected and open. Sometimes this work can be hard and painful, but it can be eased and aided by working to remember what joy and love and beauty feel like. This is the gift that Beltane brings us – the Earth responds to the warmth of the Sun with the joyful gift of green and growing life, and that same energy can warm and heal the painful and constricted places within us.
Joy and love are our birthright. But in a free-will Universe, the world we see around us is a reflection of our mass choices. Every being on this planet contributes their energy to our mass creation. Most do this unconsciously. Those of us who have the skill and the knowledge to shape energy consciously have a responsibility to help re-pattern the dominant energies into life-affirming energies of growth, love, joy and abundance. By doing this we help awaken those who are in pain and asleep to the power of their will and intent. Little by little, we change the world. Working together, the change we create is unstoppable.
Currently, Uranus is making its way through the sign of Pisces, Neptune is in Aquarius, and the positions of these planets will support healing of painful and suppressed emotions during this year’s Beltane season. Our ritual and magical practices can work with that energy – now is a good time to intentionally do the necessary work to identify our fears and pain, and let the fires of Beltane work their transformative magic.
Neptune is the planetary ruler of the sign of Pisces; both the planet and the sign are associated with feeling, spirituality, compassion, mysticism and sensitivity, and also with vagueness, self-sabotage, martyrdom, fear and delusion. Uranus is the ruler of Aquarius; both the planet and the sign are associated with freedom, sudden change, modernity, independence, and awakening and also with detachment, thoughtless behavior, violent revolution and fanaticism. With Neptune currently traveling through Uranus’ sign of Aquarius, and Uranus now in Neptune’s sign of Pisces, we have the planetary energies available to support awakening to sensitivity, to free our hearts, to help us blaze a spiritual trail of compassion and joy. These same energies can also support a delusional, self-sabotaging path of emotional detachment, thoughtlessness, and violent fanaticism. So we have a choice to make – what will we create with these energies?
As always, intent is the key. The holy day of Beltane is a reminder of an opportunity to set our intent and weave a spell of joy in our embodied life on Earth. Our joy is the greatest gift we can give our world, for it is our true nature, an incredibly powerful energy, and it opens the way to manifest a creative, peaceful and loving society for ourselves and our children. As we practice magic and perform our rituals this Beltane season, let us set an intent to open to feeling, and in doing so, begin to heal not only ourselves, but our world.

Silliness – More Couples Humor
On a whim, a man decided to get his wife a dozen roses and surprise her after work.
The minute he opened the door, his wife took one look at the flowers in his hand and started screaming, “This is the worst day that I have EVER had! The kids have been terrible. They got in a food fight, the washing machine broke and flooded the basement, I burned dinner, the dog chewed up my best pair of shoes…AND NOW YOU’VE GOT THE NERVE TO COME HOME DRUNK!”
