Regrowing veg – something is already eating the turnip leaves.

Thursday evening we got finished up so late that we had to rush when we got home to get us both fed and to get Tempus on the road for the bulk route and then the subscriber route later. I was a little better, but I still can’t lift much, so I mostly read and did a little writing… or rather made notes for writing. Tempus didn’t get in until 10am or so, but he had dozed off at the shop. The wind had been impressive and when Tempus got in, his origami paper was all over the floor! He didn’t have to pick any newspapers out of the trees, thankfully.

Newly planted cilantro seed

It was pouring rain when we headed in to town and the wind was still blustery. We didn’t have any customers in all day. I had actually thought about telling Tempus that we should just close today, but we had too much to do. He ran errands to bank, city hall, PO and pharmacy, while I worked on straightening up the inventory file. I think he got a nap later. Sash called and we talked for awhile and then Amor called and we talked for awhile more and it’s made me late starting the newsletter. I am *not* complaining that they called! It’s always good to hear from my boys.

The new lily of the valley is blooming!

I’m going to attempt to do some sewing in the evening, after we get some supper. I’m hoping that Tempus will be up to China Restaurant, so we don’t have to cook. I still can’t, really, and he needs sleep.

Succulent starts

Today we’ll be opening at 1pm. I’m not going to attempt Sewing Workshop today because my hands are still “ringing” from bopping my funny bones, but otherwise it’s a standard Saturday. I’m hoping to do more books, since I have another box to “gut” and then it’ll be time for a storage run for more.

elder month Husband_and_wife_trees - Blackthorn Ruis

Today’s Plant is Blackthorn, Prunus spinosa, sometimes called “sloe”, wish-thorn or faery tree. The blossoms, the fruits and the crimson sap display the three colors of the Great Goddess: white, black, and red. The dangerous long spikes and the red “blood” that flows in the veins of this tree enhance the dramatic effect of Her symbolism. Blackthorns are sacred to the Luantishees, which are Blackthorn Fairies who guard the trees. It makes great walking sticks, such as shillelaghs. The fruit and leaves contain Vitamin C, organic acids, tannins, and sugars. Otzi, the “Iceman” had fruits in his stomach, even though they’re pretty bitter for food. Good wines and liqueurs are made from the fruits. Steep the flowers for a diuretic, tonic, and laxative. Dried fruits can treat bladder, kidney and stomach ailments. Boil the leaves for a mouthwash or to sooth the throat from tonsillitis or laryngitis. –Feminine, Saturn, Earth – Blackthorn symbolizes the inevitability of Death, Good in magicks of protection and revenge, strife and negativity, the balance between light and darkness. The staves cane help in exorcism, to make wishes, in divination and general protection magicks. Being a plant that’s bad to tangle with it also symbolizes not only death and the conquering of death, but the wisdom gained in life and beyond life and can be used in magicks for the gaining of such wisdom. This is the anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, a Cunard Line passenger ship (although it was carrying ammo) sunk by a u-boat, which became a rallying cry against Germany leading into WWI. More on the sinking here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinking_of_the_RMS_Lusitania  and on the ship herself here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Lusitania Actually, the main reason that this ship has stuck in my mind is that my grandmother, Marie Stransky Picek, as she was emigrating from Bohemia in the Austro-Hungarian empire, was scheduled to come to the US on this ship, but she got to Bremerhaven (a journey of 400 miles, made mostly by pony-cart and rail) way early (3 months early!) and ended up making the trip on the Mauretania instead, as a 2nd class passenger, thereby missing the fatal voyage.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Mauretania_%281906%29

Spring hours are 1-6pm Thurs.-Mon., although we’re often here later as the days get longer. Need something off hours? Give us a call at 541-563-7154 or Facebook message or email at anjasnihova@yahoo.com If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open! In case of bad weather, check here at the blog for updates, on our Facebook as Ancient Light, or call the shop.

Love & Light,

Today’s Astro & Calendar

Moon in in Cancer enters Leo at 4:50am.

Waxing Moon Magick – The waxing moon is for constructive magick, such as love, wealth, success, courage, friendship, luck or healthy, protection, divination. Any working that needs extra power, such as help finding a new job or healings for serious conditions, can be done now. Also, love, knowledge, legal undertakings, money and dreams. Phase ends at the Tide Change on 5/15 at 9:15pm. Waxing Crescent phase – Keywords for the Crescent phase are: expansion, growth, struggle, opportunity. It is the time in a cycle that you gather the wisdom learned in the new phase and communicate your intention to move forward. Light a candle. Write or read an affirmation. LISTEN & ABSORB. Commit to your goal. God/dess aspect: Maiden/Youth, energy and enthusiasm – Associated God/dess: Artemis & Apollo, Mayet/Djehuti, Freya/Frey. Phase ends at the Quarter on 5/8 at 5:21pm.

How perfectly will the Moon line up with Pollux and Castor for you this evening? The Moon moves eastward along its orbit by about one Moon diameter (½°) per hour. So the exact arrangement will depend on when you look. If you look right after dark at your location, the time depends on your longitude. Western North America is favored for the precise Moon-Pollux-Castor alignment.

A gigantic asterism you may not know about is the Great Diamond. It stands some 50° tall and extends across five constellations. It’s now upright in the southeast to south after dusk. Start with Spica, its bottom. Upper left from Spica is bright Arcturus. Almost as far upper right from Arcturus is fainter Cor Caroli, 3rd magnitude. The same distance lower right from there is Denebola, the 2nd-magnitude tailtip of Leo. And then back to Spica. Robert H. Baker may have been the first to name the Great Diamond, in his 1954 book When the Stars Come Out.

The Spring Triangle – The Spring Triangle is easily visible in the April sky and consists of the bright stars Arcturus in Boötes, Spica in Virgo, and Denebola in Leo. – Astronomy: Roen Kelly

The bottom three of these stars, the brightest three, form a nearly perfect equilateral triangle. We can call this the “Spring Triangle” to parallel to those of summer and winter. The first to name it such was probably the late Sky & Telescope columnist George Lovi, writing in the March 1974 issue, but it didn’t really catch on. So let’s try again. (Here’s to you, George!)

And if you have a dark sky, or binoculars, look halfway from Cor Caroli to Denebola for the very large, sparse Coma Berenices star cluster. It spans some 4°, about the size of a ping-pong ball held at arm’s length.

Saturn currently leads the parade of early-morning planets visible right now. The ringed planet rises around 2:30 A.M. in Capricornus; two hours later, it sits roughly 20° high. Right around this time — before any hint of dawn has begun to appear — is when you want to be out this morning to catch sight of 7th-magnitude 4 Vesta, the main belt’s brightest asteroid, sitting between Saturn and the nearby bright star Deneb Algedi. Let’s locate Saturn first — an easy magnitude 0.7 in the southeastern sky, just less than 2° north of 3rd-magnitude Deneb Algedi (to the star’s upper left). Vesta sits roughly halfway on a line connecting the two, just over 1° north-northeast of Deneb Algedi and a just under 1° south-southeast of Saturn. You should be able to capture all three in binoculars or a low-power scope. Return tomorrow or the next day to watch Vesta trek east, pulling away from the planet and star and moving to their lower left. Vesta will remain within 1° of Saturn through the morning of the 9th.

Mercury, much faded, sinks out of sight in the sunset early this week.

Runic half-month of Laguz/ Lagu, 4/29-5/13 Representing the flowing and mutable forces of water, Lagu symbolizes life, growth and waxing power of this time of year.

Celtic Tree Month of Saille/Willow, Apr 15 – May 12 – The Willow in the Tree alphabet stands for the female and lunar rhythms of life. She is water-seeking, thriving from preference on the damp margins of lakes and streams or across the low-lying water meadows. Water and the tidal movements of the sea are governed by the pull of the moon. The moon in its monthly rhythms is female, contrasting with the male sun’s daily and yearly turnings. In several ways, the Celts held women in higher regard than we do today. On the material level, women were property owners, and whoever controlled the property controlled the marriage. Women of all types and ages appeared in the Celtic pantheon, the spiritual strength and life-giving qualities given by both female and male recognized equally. There were colleges of Druidesses – learned women and teachers – respected equally for their gifts of see-ship, often expressed through dreams, or night visions.
Magical Associations: Romantic love, healing, protection, fertility, magic for women.

~   Everyone should carefully observe which way his heart draws him, and then choose that way with all his strength. – Hasidic Proverb

In May, when sea-winds pierced our solitudes,
I found the fresh Rhodora in the woods,
Spreading its leafless blooms in a damp nook,
To please the desert and the sluggish brook. –Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–82)

Magick – A few important rules to teach your daughter (or anyone else!)

1. It’s okay to cry when you’re hurt. But, wash your face, and get up off the floor when you’re done. You don’t belong down there.

2. You are a woman, you do NOT need a man, but you can absolutely enjoy your life with a good one.

3. Happiness is not a permanent state. Wholeness is. Don’t confuse these.

4. Never walk through an alley alone.

5. ‘Can’t’ – is a cop-out.

6. Hold your heroes to a high standard. Be your own hero.

7. If you can’t smile with your eyes, don’t smile. Insincerity is nothing to aspire to.

8. Stay true to yourself always.

9. Your body, your rules.

10. If you have an opinion, you’d better know why.

11. Practice your passions.

12. Ask for what you want. The worst thing they can say is no.

13. Wish on stars, and then get to work to make them happen.

14. Stay as sweet as you are.

15. Say Please, Thank You, and Pardon Me, whenever the situation warrants it.

16. Reserve “I’m sorry” for when you truly are!

17. Question everything … except your own intuition.

18. You are amazing! Don’t let anyone ever make you feel you are not. If someone does….walk away. You deserve better.

19. No matter where you are, you can always come home.

20. Be happy and remember your roots, family is EVERYTHING.

21. Say what you mean and mean what you say.

22. Be kind; treat others how you would like them to treat you.

23. If in doubt, remember whose daughter you are and straighten your crown. 👑
