Yesterday morning was interesting. I woke before the alarm, managed to read the paper, plant some lettuce seed (hoping that the slugs will miss this, now) and when Tempus woke got some ritual things together.

We made it to the shop on time. The sky at home was covered with ominous-looking dark clouds that looked like rain clouds, but 1/2 a mile east we were under a blue sky with white puffy bits. Here in town the sunlight comes and goes.

Sash called just after I got today’s newsletter published and started on the one for tomorrow and we chatted for a bit. I got the mail sorted and then discovered why my the bridge of my nose was hurting. I’m missing one of the pads on my glasses! Not sure when that happened…. Hmm… where’s my repair kit?

I had about an hour to sort out mail and read in between customers (all lookers). I had a lot to go through after being offline for a couple of days. ….and I need to get this out a little early because of the Circle.

Today we’re open regular hours. I have some books to check in and I want to get a few pieces of jewelry ready for sale.

Astro neptune

Today in 1846 – Discovery of Neptune by French astronomer Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier and British astronomer John Couch Adams; verified by German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle. The planet was named for Neptune, the Roman god of the sea. Today’s Plant is the Strawberry. We have two wild varieties out here, Wood’s Strawberry, Fragaria vesca, the Coastal Strawberry, Fragaria chiloensis, and of course the Garden Strawberry, Fragaria ×ananassa, which is a hybrid. The leaves of vesca have been used to make a tea to help with diarrhea and the whole plant is used as an anti-depressant, from flowers to leaves to fruit. – Feminine, Venus, Water, Freya (and many other deities) – Carry the leaves for luck, use them in love spells and sachets, sleep on them to dream of your love. Pregnant women should carry a sachet of the leaves during the last few months of pregnancy to ease labor. The berries themselves are simply an aphrodisiac, often combined with chocolate for this purpose. Yum! Astrology, Astronomy and other Stuff

Moon in Libra enters Scorpio at 12:53am.

Waning Moon Magick – From the Full Moon to the New is a time for study, meditation, and magic designed to banish harmful energies and habits, for ridding oneself of addictions, illness or negativity. Remember: what goes up must come down. Phase ends at the Tide Change on 9/25 at 2:55pm. Hecate’s Brooch – 3-5 days before New Moon – Best time for Releasing Rituals. It’s the last few days before the new moon, the time of Hecate’s Brooch. This is the time that if you’re going to throw something out, or sweep the floors, or take stuff to Good Will, do it! Rid yourself of negativity and work on the letting go process. Release the old, removing unwanted negative energies, addictions, or illness. Do physical and psychic cleansings. Good for wisdom & psychic ability. Goddess Aspect: Crone – Associated God/desses: Callieach, Banshee, Hecate, Baba Yaga, Ereshkigal, Thoth. Phase ends at the Dark on 9/24 at 2:55am.

The waning crescent Moon at dawn steps down through Leo, as it always does at this time of year. If you look as late as 30 minutes before sunrise, bring binoculars to help with the stars. Better will be 45 or 60 minutes or more before sunrise — until the Moon gets very low on the 24th.

In early dawn tomorrow the 22nd, the waning crescent Moon hangs above Regulus in the east as shown below. The Moon forms the tip of a nearly isosceles triangle with Regulus and yellow-orange Gamma Leonis. On Friday morning the 23rd, Regulus will be left of the Moon — forming a smaller, flatter isosceles triangle with those two stars.

The tail of Ursa Major – The Big Dipper is an asterism within the larger constellation Ursa Major. The second star from the end of the handle, where it kinks, is the double star Mizar and Alcor. Eagle-eyed observers can spot both without optical aid. – OliBac (Flickr)

Spot the Big Dipper scooping low in the northwest. Examine Mizar, the middle star of its bent handle. Can you see its tiny close companion Alcor? Since this is the time of year when Vega is crossing the zenith in early evening, it’s also when Alcor stands straight over Mizar. Because a line from Mizar through Alcor always points to Vega.

Although the first day of meteorological autumn is September 1, the astronomical season doesn’t kick off until later in the month. The autumnal equinox occurs today at 9:04 P.M. EDT. The equinox is the date when the Sun’s path passes directly above the equator, marking the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere (and spring in the Southern Hemisphere). You’ve likely noticed the Sun is starting to rise later and set earlier in preparation for longer winter nights — which, although cold, are excellent for lengthy observing sessions.

Tonight as the Sun is setting, the grand constellation Pegasus the Winged Horse is rising in the east. Pegasus is the seventh-largest constellation overall and the second largest of the autumn constellations, right behind Cetus the Whale. An hour or two after sunset, once the sky grows dark, see if you can find the Great Square of Pegasus sitting due east and drawn by connecting the stars Markab, Scheat, Algenib, and Alpheratz. Within Pegasus sits an object that many consider autumn’s showpiece globular cluster: M15. It lies just 4° west-northwest of Enif, Pegasus’ nose star. Glowing at magnitude 6.2, binoculars or any small scope will show this 12′-wide ball of ancient stars; the higher the magnification, the more individual suns you’ll resolve.

Venus, magnitude –3.9, continues to rise just as dawn begins. As dawn brightens, look for it low in the east-northeast. If dawn isn’t too bright yet, try for orange Aldebaran increasingly far to Venus’s upper right. And maybe even the Pleiades above Aldebaran. Brighter Capella shines farther to Venus’s upper left.

Runic half-month of Kenaz/Ken/Kebo – September 13-27 – Ken represents a flaming torch within the royal hall, so it’s the time of the creative fire – the forge where natural materials are transmuted by the force of the human will into a mystical third, an artifact that could not otherwise come into being. The positive aspects of sexuality that are immanent in Freya and Frey come into play at this time. Nigel Pennick, The Pagan Book of Days, Destiny Books, Rochester, Vermont, USA, 1992, p. 102

Celtic Tree Month of Muin/Vine  Sep 2 – 29 – Muin  – (MUHN, like “foot”), vine – The grape (Vitis vinifera L.) is a vine growing as long as 35 m (115 feet), in open woodlands and along the edges of forests, but most commonly seen today in cultivation, as the source of wine, grape juice, and the grape juice concentrate that is so widely used as a sweetener. European grapes are extensively cultivated in North America, especially in the southwest, and an industry and an agricultural discipline are devoted to their care and the production of wine. Grapes are in the Grape family (Vitaceae).

Priest – And there is still Mystery…

Priestess – These things are within you, but you must seek them.
Priest – They are given freely, but you must work to attain them.
Priestess – Look within, find without.
Priest – Search the entire Universe and find your own soul within you.

Priestess – I am my Father’s daughter.
Priest – I am my Mother’s son.
